Cinnamon File Search

Post by pdhunter1987 » Wed Dec 07, 2016 8:29 pm

Hello,

Not sure if this has been asked before...

In windows 7 start menu has inbuilt file search in search bar not just for finding software but also files, like documents, resume, budget files, etc.

KDE plasma has this out of the box but cinnamon doesn't.

I understand alot of people wouldn't want this feature but I love it, it comes in handy more than you think.

It's the only thing I like about he "Unity" desktop.

Question:
Is their any option or applet or way to enable this?

I understand synapse, catfish and that but I prefer file search in start menu.

Does anyone else like this feature or is it just me?

Open the configuration of the menu (right click the menu in the panel to open it), you find this option further down in the list.

Seriously? Wow, that's embarrassing!

Thanks Cosmo, but I tried that and that only adds ability to search a directory like "/use/bin" etc etc.

Not search files directly.

It's alright I will just get used to using synapse for file search.
Maybe in future Cinnamon will have search function.

Do you mean the file search window at the top of the Cinnamon Menu?

There is also a file search option in Nemo, activated by a click on the magnifier icon. If you highlight a particular folder, the search will be conducted within that folder.

There is also the "automatic" search from the Desktop, activated by typing any letter - exit via Esc.

Thanks for information Kyphi!
Yes the search bar inside menu.

I'd really like this functionality, but i can live without it.

In Windows 7, when you click on the "Start" icon, there is a search facility that states "Search programs (sic) and files".

In Linux Mint 18, when you click on the "Menu" icon, there is a search facility at the top of the menu index that fulfills the same function. Is that missing from your installation?

Yes, the search function in cinnamon only searches for installed software, not local files on the computer. KDE, GNOME and Unity offer this function. However I love cinnamon.

The fastest way to search for a file is to use the terminal with the command locate which results in the full path to the sought file.

I love Linux Mint too and also understand how hard it can be to cut the Windows apron strings and abandon what seemingly had become second nature. All I can say is that it is well worth it to persevere.

The suggestion by kyphi is what you should try. Open a terminal (ctrl-alt-t) and enter locate filename
