Windows stutter when being dragged

Post by cottfcfan » Sat Dec 10, 2016 2:58 pm

This is a problem I have had ever since Cinnamon was used as a Window Manager, & is still present in the latest 18.1 beta.
When dragging windows or playing cards in Aisleriot, the drag is really scratchy, and not smooth as with other window managers.
This is a problem others seem to be encountering as well.
https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/2465
This is on a system with integrated Intel HD Graphics.
I have googled around & found nothing that works.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks deepakdeshp.
I checked the link, but none of those instances refer to my issue.
This is purely a cinnamon issue, that doesn't occur in any other distro or window manager.

Check whether cinnamon is using a lot of CPU time when you do that. I had this problem, too, and it lead back to a certain applet (sticky@scollins). See here: viewtopic.php?f=208&t=211771&p=1104861& ... n#p1115214

CPU usage seems fine. This is on a fresh install with no extra applets installed.
I even added cinnamon to my Ubuntu Unity install and the same issue exists, even though unity runs silky smooth.

cottfcfan,

Just researching this issue myself. Did a clean install of 18.1 Cinnamon when it came out and noticed this laggy window drag immediately. I don't remember this being an issue for me in 18 Cinnamon. In Linux Mint 18 XFCE I was able to fix this issue via vsync options that were available.

Let us know if you come across any new information. ;)

The stuff in the 1st answer here worked for me with Intel Ironlake series video ...

http://askubuntu.com/questions/292224/b ... l-ironlake

Don't expect stellar performance with Cinnamon though ... it's really better with more power. I use Xfce but Mate wouold also be good (I used to use that too).

And above all, do NOT install newer releases thinking it'll fix issues with older hardware. It may do that with newer hardware but with older it's more likely to make things worse.

OK. I've managed to ease this problem to a degree. Thanks all for your help which has pointed me in the right direction.
I don't think this is a power issue here though as kde & unity work flawlessly, & I wouldn't think cinnamon needs more power than those 2.
I have found a partial solution here:
https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/3423
The posts aren't numbered but the 20th post down by Arpy222 helps the issue.

I have also heard others saying to turn off vsync, which is enabled by default in Cinnamon.
Anyone have any idea how to do that??

Just to add to my previous post. Running glxgears shows the extent of this problem.
In Unity, Xfce & Kde, the cogs on the gears turn smoothly, & FPS is what it should be.
In Cinnamon even though the FPS is correct the cogs are not smooth at all.
Although I want to use Cinnamon, if unsolved I may have to use XFCE as my main Desktop.

Even I get stuttering while moving widows. The reason is due to the windows magnetism. The windows are designed to stick to nearby windows or taskbar like a magnet. This is a not a flaw but a feature implemented to make it easier to place windows side by side. Just see if that's your issue or something else.

Thanks for your reply johnbonda.
I don't think this can be a feature. It affects not only dragging windows, but windows opening & closing and any effect. It is purely Cinnamon specific & has been the same since day 1 of Cinnamon. Turning off all the effects helps, but only really masks the problem. As I mentioned in my last post, running glxgears highlights the problem. On every other DE, the gears turn smoothly, but on cinnamon they stutter around. At the moment I'm using xfce. I'd love to use Cinnamon, but cannot get around this issue.
