Cinnamon repetitive freezes/lags

Hi!

I've just installed Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon (previous distro was an old LMDE, also with Cinnamon).

I experience the following issue: every 10 to 20 seconds, the GUI freezes for about 1 sec, and then continue as usual. These lags coincide with spurs in CPU activity up to 100%, as shown by this screenshot:
http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?i ... onLags.png
(this was recorded while doing nothing special, and each surge seen on the screenshot caused a lag as described below).

The issue seems to increase with the uptime (the longer the machine has been on for, the longer each lag).

To be noted: the issue is critical when using the mouse wheel on the sound widget to increase/decrease the main sound level. The cursor moves very slowly to its new position, however fast the wheel is actioned.

I have no graphic card in the machine, thus using the Intel chipset with its driver (intel microcode v 3.20151106.1).

The issue seems to be very similar to this post (viewtopic.php?f=208&t=227638) but as far as I'm concerned, no satisfactory answer came out of it :(

Here is some more info on my system:

The system log may hold clues. Have a terminal ready and the next time the freeze happens run this command to show the system log for past 5 minutes and share the output here:
journalctl --no-pager -S -5minutes

Please also run this command to show any errors that occurred this boot and share the output also:
journalctl --no-pager -b -p3

No luck with the first command: --no entries--
(but it made me realize that some random Chinese IP was repeatedly trying to log as root on my machine )

Here is the result of the second one:

Same here with Logitech BT Mouse M535.

The bluez developer team seems to ignore the issue for years, considering the vast amount of unsolved forums submissions I found during my web searches. :x

I had similar problem too in LM 18.2 and LM 18.3 Cinnamon.
I use laptop and it seems my problem exists only with external display attached.
First I noticed that steadily moving mouse-pointer stumbles every 20 seconds or so. I continuously move my hand but pointer stops for about 500ms.
Next I noticed that all video output is freezing in this moment.

As I remember I have eventually found some workaround for that. It was some rural magic - attach external display with laptop's lid closed or opened...
But LM had a few more painful issues with external display so I removed it from my laptop...

I wish that was shocking. At any given time you're online there's very likely someone trying to get in.

Aren't you glad you use Linux rather than WIndows?
