[solved] How to refresh video thumbnails?

Post by kwazy »

HI,
I'm running the latest Mint with Cinnamon.
I have a folder with video files, but I couldn't get previews until I installed additional codecs. Now preview for video files works, but only for newly viewed folders. The folder that was opened before I installed codecs remains without preview.

If I copy new file into that folder - preview is shown only for that new file. Even if I copy the same file from within that folder - it will have a preview for only that file.

Is there a way to force refresh of all thumbnails?

Thanks

Did you try the "Reload" button on the toolbar?

Which one is reload? I tried hiting "F5" - that does not help

Looks like a bug to me. Steps to repro:

1. Install Mint WITHOUT checking thirdparty codecs
2. copy some video files
3. check that there is no preview for them
4. open one of the video files using Media Player - it will ask you to install codecs
5. install codecs
6. copy one of the files
7. preview has been generated for that copied file, all the rest video files remain without preview

Open your file manager and make hidden files visible. Open the folder .cache in our home and delete the folder thumbnails inside. All thumbnails have to get recreated now.

Yes, the "Reload" button is the same as F5
To have it on your toolbar, you have to put it there. Preferences > Toolbar

That worked!
I deleted everything from "~/.cache/thumbnails/fail" - and thumbnails have been recreated
Thanks!

Very helpful, this procedure still worked for me today with Cinnamon 4.2.4 (on Artix Linux) and avoided rebuilding the working thumbnails.
