Missing/Corrupt Nemo Side Panel Icons [SOLVED]

Post by bug67 »

Somehow, while dragging/dropping my music folder to Nemo's side panel, it disappeared. I used Nemo's "undo move" feature to restore the folders place in "Home." However, upon trying to drag the restored folder back to the side panel, the icon matched the original music folder instead of the rest of the icons in the panel. How can I make this icon return to its original look? See attached image for reference. TIA.

Open Nemo and make hidden files visible (ctrl-h). Go in the folder .config and open the file user-dirs.dirs in your text editor. Paste the content of the file here.

Try to remove it from the side panel and add it again.

Permission problem? Do this check:
Mark the following command and press ctrl-c

Code: Select all

find $HOME ! -user $USER -type f
open a terminal and press ctrl-shift-V
Mark the complete result inclusive the command with the mouse and press ctrl-shift-C
In the forum click the Code-button above the text box, than press ctrl-v.

Report in case, that there is no output.

If there is nothing more than this one entry - it is the result of a long standing bug in Mint 18.x - than permissions are not the problem.

To check further create a fresh new user account. Same problem there?

No. The problem does not occur in a new user account. All is as it should be. I'm assuming then that I will need to use the new user account to fix this issue? That will mean re-setting everything up all over again, correct? Might as well re-install. This is crazy! :?

No, reinstalling Mint is not needed. We know now, that the culprit is some settings in your main account.

To (hopefully) identify them open in the main account the file manager and make hidden files visible (ctrl-h). Now rename the folder .config to .config.bck, also the folder .local accordingly. Those are the 2 most suspicious places. Immediately after renaming log out of your account and back in. Both folders will get recreated with default values. Does this change anything for you?

I think this may have occurred because you've installed an icon theme for GNOME which doesn't follow the naming convention adhered to in Mint and for that reason, it is replaced by default icon. Maybe you can locate the "Music" icon of that particular icon theme and then in Nemo change manually to desired icon of the Music folder by editing its properties - just click the icon in upper left and navigate to where you have found the Music folder icon.

That did it! I had to reconfigure a few desktop and panel items but, the icon issue is solved! Thank you so much for sticking it out with me. :D
