Freeze when changing resolution

Post by astral » Sun May 28, 2017 1:49 am

Hi,

I'm running Mint 18.1 on Dell XPS 15 9560, with the 4.9.0-040900 kernel.

My resolution is set to 3840 x 2160 (16:9) with Double Hi-dpi scaling and I use the nvidia 381.22 drivers.

In some cases I need to change the resolution to 1920 x 1080 (16:9) in order to view better some programs that don't support Hi-dpi and appear really tiny in 3840 x 2160 resolution.
The problem is that when I return back to the 3840 x 2160 the system freezes and I can only move the mouse without being able to click on anything.

If I ctrl+alt+F1 and reboot, the resolution is still 1920 x 1080 and any attempt to set it back to 3840 x 2160 results in the same freezing.

If I boot from a recovery kernel, after a few attempts I can revert it back to 3840 x 2160 resolution.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Here is a way to install Nvidea.driver. you can try it after backing up your system.https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/12

What do you mean? I already have the latest proprietary driver installed (381.22), and I'm not using the Nouveau driver.

I'm having this exact same problem! I'm running Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon on a Dell XPS 13 9360. This happened to me when I needed to change from a HiDPI resolution to 1920x1080 in order to see some apps that were not properly scaling. Now I cannot get it back to 3200x1800 because the screen freezes whenever I try to change the resolution. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Ok, I troubleshot my own problem. Hopefully this will help someone. I suspected that it may have to do with the proprietary driver for the display. I went into System Settings-->Driver Manager and turned off the proprietary driver. I rebooted to register the change. Upon logging in after the reboot, I changed my display resolution back to 3200x1800 (HiDPI) with no problem. I suppose I could turn the proprietary driver back on again, but if I'll see how things go when I use the default driver. At least now I can change back and forth between screen resolutions without incident. The offending driver was the following: intel-microcode Version 3.20151106.1.

Solution 1 - Recommended for people with modern Intel GPUs (2007 and newer)
Remove the Intel driver to use modesetting instead:

apt remove xserver-xorg-video-intel

And then reboot the computer.

Solution 2 - Recommended for people with old Intel GPUs (i965, i915, i8xx..etc)
Disable VSync:

echo CLUTTER_VBLANK=none >> ~/.profile
