Periodic freeze/lag, modeset(G0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 220000KHz

Post by wreckedpie »

Hey, this is my first post so please don't gas me if I post it the wrong place, please tell me where to post a general X question
I'm having an annoying periodic freeze which occurs every 1-2 minute when this occurs
[ 1952.633] (--) modeset(G0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 220000KHz

It's very annoying, like someone is sitting there and sticking a needle in you while you are working or just using the system. The freeze only lasts a split second, but that is enough to make you miss buttons and generally miss click.
I am using one screen at my laptops HDMI port and another one at it's display port. Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this issue, which lets me keep my nvidia driver(it's required for the Vulkan SDK) and allows me to use my HDMI port?
Just verified that the modeset above is causing the freeze, I was initially clueless. Anyways here are my logs if they are needed, let me know if you need anything else.

I have the EXACT same problem, and it has been driving me crazy. I feel your pain about this causing miss clicks. It happens to me about every 30s to 1m, and like you said - it's just enough of a hiccup to disrupt your work flow.

I have a similar set up. Since I couldn't get the HP Thunderbolt 3 docking station to work with Linux, I have one monitor hooked up to the HDMI port, and the other via a usb-c adapter via DPI.

The only difference between our Xorg.0.log is that mine references intel:

Code: Select all

[ 28975.261] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
[ 28991.670] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
[ 29022.661] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
[ 29053.665] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
[ 29084.666] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
[ 29115.663] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
[ 29146.661] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
[ 29177.668] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz

[ 29239.669] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz

If anyone has any idea what is causing this, you'd now make two people very happy!

Hello,

I'm afraid i can't really help you about the diagnosis of this particular problem but what i can say for sure is that Cinnamon 3+ seems to often generate freezes problems, whatever the hardware it is running on.
There are several posts about it on this forum as well as other ones.

As i really like the look & feel of Cinnamon I had to resign myself and downgrade to Mint 17.3 with Cinnamon 2.8 to finally get a reliable DE back.

Which nvidia driver was recommended in Mint Driver Manager? Because that one is usually the one you want. Getting newer ones from the mfr's site or a ppa isn't such a good idea.

Driver Manager doesn't give any options, other than microcode for Intel cpu.

I've tried running the Intel Graphic Driver Tools v2.0.2, but it always fails on the distribution check. I've tried fooling the utility by editing the /etc/lsb-release file to other distribution settings, but nothing works.

The laptop's built-in screen never seems to suffer from these video hiccups. It only happens on external displays. I've tried different monitors, different cables, to no avail. Sometimes, a hard reboot will fix the problem temporarily, but eventually something triggers it. I suspect it occurs after the system wakes up from suspend mode. However, sometimes a hard reboot doesn't always fix the problem. It seems random, and as the OP mentioned, very annoying.
Every time the video freezes for a split second, an entry is generated into the Xorg.0.log as posted above.

My system:
HP Elitebook x360 G2
Integrated: Intel HD Graphics 620

Linux Mint 18.2
4.10.0-33-generic x86_64 (I've tried several other kernels both up and down)

Same issue here. LG 49UJ6300 display. 4K@60hz works fine from my other laptop (Nvidia 780) but getting the same error with regards to the TMDS max frequency.
4K does work, but it's laggy as hell. I can't quite tell if it's 30hz laggy, or something else.

Currently testing on kernel 4.15.2 and using the most recent intel drivers from some PPA.

This is insane. I bought and returned my first 4k display years ago, and it's STILL not really supported :| What really kills me, is that the UHD 620 Graphics is Intels flagship for 4K, and they claim to support it under Linux.

Anyone else have any brilliant insights?

Months later, even after applying updates, the problem persists..

When I'm using external displays, I have discovered if I keep the laptop physically open (even though the screen is disabled), the problem goes away. The moment I close the lid, the hiccups and error messages return.

This is what is logged when I close the laptop:

Code: Select all

[ 77783.609] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 1920x1080@60.0 on HDMI1 using pipe 0, position (1680, 0), rotation normal, reflection none
[ 77783.708] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 1680x1050@59.9 on DP2 using pipe 1, position (0, 30), rotation normal, reflection none
[ 77783.831] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
[ 77814.634] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
[ 77817.606] (--) intel(0): HDMI max TMDS frequency 225000KHz
When I open the lid (screen disabled):

Code: Select all

[ 77817.627] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 1680x1050@59.9 on DP2 using pipe 0, position (0, 30), rotation normal, reflection none
[ 77817.746] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 1920x1080@60.0 on HDMI1 using pipe 1, position (1680, 0), rotation normal, reflection none

I keep myself sane by just leaving the laptop lid up as a work-around. I'd still love to know the root cause, but for anyone else that may come across this thread suffering from the same problem, maybe this will help.

There is a thread on here from a while back where the OP was experiencing video stuttering (I think) when the laptop lid was closed, I'll see if I can find it. Does disabling lid-close events have any effect? It could also be a heat issue, so worth monitoring system temperatures.
