Cinnamon 3.6.6 Crashes

Post by cessanfrancisco »

Hello,

I am running Linux Mint 18.3 with Cinnamon 3.6.6, on an HP 9470m laptop.

I upgraded to LM 18.3 a couple of days ago and since then Cinnamon crashes whenever I wake the computer from suspend.

Any suggestions for rectifying the problem? It should be noted, I wasn't having this issue prior to the upgrade to LM 18.3.

Thanks in advance.

PLease get your memory test and test memory by running memtest at the first boot grub menu, Install and use SMART utility to check your disk

Hi. I have made a post on this same issue. I also wasn't getting this problem until I upgraded 2 days ago (From 17.10 -> Sonya 18.2). I'm crashing (cinnamon) every 30 minutes now. My post is under user "babysparrow". I must say I didn't realise I was upgrading Mint version. Starting to feel like a system tester here!!

It is not suggested to upgrade from 17.x to 18.
After backing up your data it should be a fresh install of 18.x. BTW 18.3 Cinnamon is available now.

Slightly off topic here but :

Code: Select all

It is not suggested to upgrade from 17.x to 18.
After backing up your data it should be a fresh install of 18.x. BTW 18.3 Cinnamon is available now
As I stated in my post (this thread), I didn't realise I was accepting an upgrade : just an update.

So I now need to re-install? Seriously?

Re install isn't so difficult or is it?

To anyone debugging out there:

I have been developing "the other half" of an app I'm working on using Android Studio. Cinnamon hasn't crashed once all day. When I was experiencing crashes yesterday I was using eclipse and programming java swing. This meant that I was repeatedly firing up new windows (which need to be managed by a window manager) from eclipse (my Android runnables are going to an external device.) IMHO the frequency of my cinnamon crashes relates to the number of Java swing windows I had created (consecutively not concurrently). I was also running a socket server app which was communicating with the swing windows but don't think this matters Anyway.... Don't shoot! : just trying to help now that I've finally put my own tools down for the night.

When I upgraded from version 17 to 18 I faced myriad unexplained problems. A clean install to 18 and all was ok. Point upgrade is ok. Meaning e g 18.0 to 18.1

Hello,

I'm having this problem too, having updated from 18.2 to 18.3.

When I wake from suspend, after entering my password I get a message to the effect that I am in fallback mode, Cinnamon has crashed, and would I like to restart it?

inxi output is below. If any other info would help with debugging, happy to provide it.

Well, I did a fresh install of 18.3 and that seems to have fixed everything *knock on wood*

I guess the issue has been solved for the most part, but it would be nice to know of a way to remedy the problem without a complete re-install.

Agreed, cessanfrancisco. I've spent a long time setting up Mint the way I want it, and would prefer not to have to do it all again on a fresh install :)

I haven't had chance to test it out myself yet, but there's Timeshift already installed in 18.3. You can set daily/weekly etc backups, and do manual backups. Just so you know that there needn't be a total install of things in case of needing to do a clean install. I've used Timeshift to restore an earlier state a few times and it's been great; one art appimage program's folders weren't cleaned out of things I'd added, but that is most likely down to the (sometimes buggy) program itself and it being an appimage. For every other program, Timeshift has worked perfectly.

I had this same problem recently, but solved it by using Timeshift to restore a snapshot I had made 2 days earlier.
The problem is that I updated the amdgpu, mesa, opengl, radeon, nouveau, intel drivers as recommended in Update Manager.
Upon reboot, I got the "Cinnamon has just crashed. Using Fallback mode" error.
I figured it was the updates listed above.
I restored a snapshot via Timeshift, rebooted, and all is well.
Sure enough, just last night I updated via Update Manager, rebooted, and the same thing.
So, I restored a snapshot via Timeshift again, and every thing is hunkydory.
I won't make that mistake again.

LM18.3 Cinnamon Sylvia 64-bit crashed after updating the following MESA/OpenGL & Radeon/Nouveau/Intel/Amdgpu updates:
libxatracker2 17.07 > 17.2.4
libgles1-mesa 17.07 > 17.2.4
libglapi-mesa 17.07 > 17.2.4
libgl1-mesa-glx 17.07 > 17.2.4
libgles2-mesa 17.07 > 17.2.4
libwayland-egl1-mesa 17.07 > 17.2.4
libegl1-mesa 17.07 > 17.2.4
libglbm1 17.07 > 17.2.4
libgl1-mesa-dri 17.07 > 17.2.4
libdrm-radeon1 2.4.76-1 > 2.4.83-1
libdrm-nouveau2 2.4.76-1 > 2.4.83-1
libdrm-intel1 2.4.76-1 > 2.4.83-1
libdrm-amdgpu1 2.4.76-1 > 2.4.83-1
libdrm2 2.4.76-1 > 2.4.83-1

I am lucky I had created a Timeshift snapshot 2 days earlier.

I also get this on a clean new install using Mint 18.3 on AMD Athlon X2 CPU, 8200M G card, regardless of video driver used. Solid as a rock with 18.1 clean reinstall.

PLease reinstall same kernel version as 18.1 using kernel update utility.
To know your running kernel version
uname -a
. To find 18.1 version use 18.1 live usb
