error unable to launch cinnamon
After updating to Sylvia I opened the computer and it showed me the message unable to launch cinnamon X session. I tried the sudo apt install mint-meta-cinnamon but nothing

Is it an upgrade from 18.x to Sylvia? From 17.x it's not recommended, but a fresh install

Upgrading from 18.2 to 18.3 broke the desktop launch for me too.
'sudo startx' works manually on the console.
Seems that the 'slick-greeter' is broken in 18.3.
Removing it and installing 'lightdm-webkit-greeter' or 'lightdm-gtk-greeter' instead, solved the issue for me.
