Cinnamon Crashes every half hour

Post by babysparrow »

I've posted on this matter before and seen countless workarounds for cinnamon crashing, but is there any official word from MINT that this might be getting looked into? I can't find a bug number out there anywhere which might lead me to believe so.

I really like MINT (I've tried many) but this is now becoming a real pain. For example in Eclipse I suddenly loose my cursor for a while and then cinnamon crashes. Whereas before I thought it's just a 10-15 second interruption kind of problem ... it's now becoming a real "pack my bags and go" type of issue. I've seen many posts out there saying "kill this" , "hup that", "install the other" but I'm not happy with all of that when I'm doing multithread programming. In fact I'm not happy with that at all as a "solution". I've not had a problem like this over 15 years of RH, Ubuntu, Lubuntu etc. What's going on?

It also crashes while using android studio and at other times too. But Eclipse is definitely worst. Not even firing up Swing windows today (serverside today, me).

For clarity I run Mint triple boot Win7, Fed26 and I never get this problem over there.

My install was clean and I've installed every update that's come along.

So : is MINT looking into this or not? I hope so - it's my favourite distro.

Syslog below - special attention to line #3. Like ... "Houston, we've had a problem". And for quite some time now so it seems.

To Debuggers out there.

Has anyone looked at screensaver? I don't normally use one : why would I?

I am never in a situation where screensaver kicks in. But since I fiddled with it I can't seem to get rid of it.

It just sits there with irq and mem access all by itself and probably gets no attention.

So. Everything worked ok until I listened to some Rob Dougan music and thought ... Hey, lets see if that old Matrix screensaver is in here (it is). And I went through all of the screensavers - one by one. Yes I was bored. And please don't go thinking that this is anything to do with the Matrix being in my sad little mind!

Anyway. I can pin a few failures that I have here since that time :

1. Wifi network problems on suspend
2. Lid close not working
3. Cannot deselect screensaver.
4. Cinnamon crashes.

Just a hunch but I'll post some more syslog in here purely because screensaver does show up in there.

Love Mint. Just trying to help.

First, I would test the memory:
sudo memtester 1024 5

Second, LM18.3 locks-up after 2-5 minutes if my cpu is running 'ondemand'.
If I set the cpu to run in 'performance' mode, no lock-ups.

Third, I would try another kernel.

Good luck.

I've also been having the same problem, except less frequently. I use Xscreensaver, and have done everything I can to disable gnome-screensaver (not that I ever turned it on), so I don't think it is the screensaver (for me, at least).
weird question: do you have java installed? I may be wrong but I have a suspicion that java is causing this.
Another guess would be something graphics card related.

It looks like there are 'issues' raised for this crash (or very similar ones) on the Cinnamon Github and the devs have done some work on it - https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/6755 & https://github.com/linuxmint/cjs/issues/56.

It ultimately appears to be an issue with Mozilla's SpiderMonkey JS interpreter used in Cinnamon.

What does apt version cjs return? It appears some patches were applied relevant to this crash with version 3.6.0. - 3.6.1 is current.
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.
