Panel limitations

Post by wutsinterweb »

I've moved from KDE to Cinnamon in part, since KDE is being removed from direct spin development, and I like Cinnamon better in some ways, but question/request:

In the panel, every instance of an open item, such as a new file manager window or other browser window, creates a whole separate tab rather than how, in KDE, they are consolidated and a hover over allows you to choose which one. Sadly, I tend to have several things open and running at once and Panel space gets used up. Is there a remedy to this?

Secondly, also with the panel, is there a way to get it to allow TWO rows rather than one, of open windows/apps?

I've been using Mint for over 4 years, but I'm still a slow learner. I have a website: https://pickfetish.com. It is dedicated to guitar/instrument picks.

For the first query try Icing Task manager https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/269 or CobiWindowsList https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/287 as alternatives to the default Windows List applet. Links are to their respective pages on Cinnamon Spices but they can be installed via the Applets app in Cinnamon Settings. Both do App grouping.

Don't think there is currently anyway to have multiple rows on one panel...but nice idea.
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

The buttons you're seeing on the panel for all your open applications are made by the Windows List applet; there is another version of that applet that allows 'grouping' (showing only one button/icon for several instances of the same application).

I see that Smurphos beat me to it. :)

Also possibly of interest: if you are using multiple workspaces, windows open on a certain workspace will only be shown on the panel of that workspace. So you could spread your open applications over several workspaces, and then your panel would not be so crowded.

If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!
