Cinnamon 18.2 Kernel Updates 4.11 & 4.13

Post by PlutoPup » Sat Jan 13, 2018 8:06 am

I am presently running Kernel 4.10.42 as the "UPDATES' 4.11 and 4.13 caused my OS to crash upon boot. I had to 'UN-INSTALL" these Kernels and go back to 4.10.42 where the OS boots up without a hitch.

The first of these problem Kernel Updates I did was Kernel 4.11. After "INSTALL" upon reboot the system crashed and would not correct itself after several reboots. Thinking that a newer Kernel would fix the problem, I "INSTALLED" 4.13, but upon reboot the system still crashed. Going back to 4.10.42 the system boots up just fine.

I don't know any other was to report this problem.

It's a known fact that not all kernels will work with all hardware.

Try installing 4.4.0-109. That one, too, has been patched against the recent vulnerabilities; also it's LTS (Long Time Support). The one you are currently using is neither of those things.

I'm not sure I'm understanding. Since 4.10 is way more recent than 4.4, I'm having trouble with idea of going all the way back to 4.4, but if that's what I should do then I will.! Didn't even think that 4.10 wouldn't have LTS.

Only the 4.4 kernel series is LTS. The newer kernel series are either HWE (hardware enablement) or HWE-edge, meaning that they're short-lived and only there for support of recent hardware.

QUESTION:

Do I need to remove all the Kernels that show installed that are a higher # than 4.4.0-109..?
I've installed 4.4.0-109 but my system still shows 4.10.0-42 as active..

OK. Running with Kernel 4.4.0-109 now. used recovery mode to get my system to boot-up with this Kernel.

I have removed all Kernels with a higher number so it will boot-up each time with this Kernel.
