Memory Leak in Cinnamon on 18.3?

Post by Den4Wa »

Two weeks ago I decided it was time to update from LM 17.3 to LM 18.3 on my main desktop for a number of reasons that are irrelevant to this post. The desktop is a Core I5 4600K with 8GB memory and has been a very stable machine for several years now(always running Linux Mint). I have notice an issue with Cinnamon that I have never seen before and that is the memory usage creeps up over several days (i.e. rebooted Wednesday morning at 9AM EST and Cinnamon was consuming about 300 MB now on Thursday at 4:58PM EST it has consumed 2.1GB of memory). Anyone know if this is something continuing in Cinnamon as I have seen posts for LM 17.2 & 17.3 with questions about memory usage in Cinnamon, any light that can be shed would be appreciated.

Did you, by any chance, install any desklets or applets in your Cinnamon? Those are the usual suspects....

Yes but only the same ones I had installed in LM 17.3, are there any particular suspects in LM 18.3?

I wouldn't know. Test by first disabling them all, and then enabling them one by one.

Okay sounds reasonable, I will test them all. Boy it has been a long time since I have had any issue with Mint, has always been rock solid for me on this machine, I guess I have gotten a little complacent about Mint, LOL!!! :D

Well, upgrading from 17.x to 18.x doesn't give the optimal technical result as well.... I only recommend upgrades within the same series.

Reason: when you stay within the same series, the underlying codebase remains the same (e.g. for 18.x that's Ubuntu 16.04).

Sorry I should have clarified my term "upgrade", I was using it generically not that I actually did an upgrade to 18.3 from 17.3. I did a clean install of 18.3 with the drive wiped in between, I know better then to upgrade from one series to another, as a matter of practice I always do a clean install, lesson learned from early days as a Unix admin.

BTW I have turned off all applets and desklets that the system will let me, still Cinnamon memory usage is going up. Abet it is slower than before turning them off, but still climbing none the less. I will let it go over night and see where it is tomorrow.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:

- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);

- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;

- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

- Press Enter.

- Copy/paste the output in your next message.
