[solved] Cinnamon constantly crashes (was docker's fault)

Post by artik »

Hi,

After years of utilization, and trying to push people to move on this really stable system, I'm facing constant crashes of cinnamon since 3 days. I'm not in confidante anymore with my OS, keeping a terminal open in case cinnamon crashes again, and this strange feeling I'm working on an unstable system that I don't trust. What a gap...

To help focus what's happening, here are some info and logs:

- I didn't update any kernel version since weeks
- I didn't updated cinnamon recently
- No new applets installed or removed since years
- I tried to revert the kernel, and tried few of them till 4.10. It affects all kernels.
- When I try to cinnamon --replace --display=:0 on another TTY, I have a segfaults error when I try to recover my cinnamon

In the meanwhile, I reinstalled cinnamon

Code: Select all

sudo apt update && sudo apt install --reinstall cinnamon -y && sudo reboot
and reset the cinnamon settings to out of the box

Code: Select all

dconf reset -f /org/cinnamon/
I'm a bit lost how to target this bug, but I need help. Next week full reinstall if not solved, but with my setup it will be a real pain to do it.

All help is welcome :)

Reinstall the basics is quick for me, it's more all re-setup (docker, my web environment, php etc etc). But thanks anyway

Does ~/.xsession-errors give any clues? Also while you're there, are you the owner of ~/.Xauthority ?

None of these folders in my home. If it crashed again, I'll have a look. Maybe reseting the settings also removed these folders.

I'm not sure about .xsession-errors but .Xauthority should definitely be there, note the '.' before the file name indicates the file is hidden so in nemo you must either ctl-h to toggle OR View - Show Hidden Files to show those files.

artik, since it happens frequently, try keeping a terminal open with journalctl -f running until the next Cinnamon crash happens...(btw, the journalctl log above is partial & only shows the very first entries)...

thx-1138 wrote: Fri Feb 09, 2018 3:35 pm artik, since it happens frequently, try keeping a terminal open with journalctl -f running until the next Cinnamon crash happens...(btw, the journalctl log above is partial & only shows the very first entries)...
Ah, good to know! I did it, and i'll wait till tomorrow to see what's happening. Thanks for the tip

Not sure whats going on, can you post the output of the following terminal commands one line at a time.

Code: Select all

find $HOME ! -user $USER -type -f
cat /etc/fstab
lsblk -lf

Ok! Lot's of news this morning. Cinnamon crashed again during the night. So deleted cinnamon settings didn't help.

@greerd:

Code: Select all

find $HOME ! -user $USER -type -f
find: Arguments to -type should contain only one letter

Code: Select all

cat /etc/fstab

In the meanwhile, I tried reinstalling Nvidia drivers:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-390
Let's see what happen now.

I made an error in my first command, should be find $HOME ! -user $USER -type f, (not '-f').
But I now realized you're using encryption, maybe thats why all the directory reassigning in the .xsession-errors output and why your fstab's /boot and /boot/efi changed from sda to sdf.

I'm not familiar with encryption, hopefully others can shed some light on your situation.

This certainly looks like a driver crash. I run the 384.111 driver on my Nvidia1060 without issues. Currently running Cinnamon on Ubuntu Bionic though. Would have to double check what version I'm running in Mint.
When I give opinions, they are my own. Not necessarily those of any other Linux Mint developer or the Linux Mint project as a whole.

Absolutely. Wasn’t in red in my log, so i didn’t focus on it. I just reinstalled the 384 too.
If it’s this, it means that I’ll face the same issue reinstalling all my setup.

Thanks for the tip, and fingers crossed.

No luck this morning. Crashed with the nvidia drivers 384. I'll try to wait working till I got the error live with

Code: Select all

journalctl -f
And I'll post the log. I start to be stuck, and re-installation looks even closer now.

artik, try looking back a little before the crash occurs, ie. you need to somehow trace back what might have triggered the crash...

Nvidia's own page in regards to the Xid error above isn't exactly what i'd call...enlightening => http://docs.nvidia.com/deploy/xid-errors/index.html
The Bluetooth related sequence of errors has a bug report here with various workarounds mentioned and / or linked to. There are also a few other messages in regards to devices registering / detection...since you said that neither kernel / Cinnamon / Nvidia driver were changed, then maybe maybe the crashes started to appear after you plugged a newer device, or in a different port than usual? lsusb & lspci will help you examining the above...

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes

Post by artik »

Unbelievable, I think I figured it out! What a story....

Back after few months of a fresh reinstallation (as I explained before): problem is back!!! Exactly the same. As said thx-1138, I have this time saved the full log of:

Code: Select all

journalctl -f
First of all, I did a big mistake with the paste of the log: I deleted MANY lines that was all the same, and I tought was pointless to target the bug, as i had thousands od them. I tought was good to clean to get a proper help. These lines was regarding a curious network issue.

Code: Select all

Jul 02 12:21:52 linuxmint NetworkManager[992]: <info> [1530526912.2201] device (vethb6b78e2): link disconnected
Guess what? This seems to be the bug I was always facing. I was more expecting a Nvidia issue, or cinnamon, but no. conflict between 2 softwares or lib can affect the visual, and create a crash of your system. I my case was every 30min more or less, sometimes 3, sometimes 40.

So! I decided to check my log, especially this network issue. Here is a paste of what was constantly loggued, every seconds or 2 seconds:

So this was looping, again and again. What really helped me, what this strange behavior of the network manager applet:

I decided to investigate this way, and first topic that popout on google is regarding "docker" https://stackoverflow.com/questions/492 ... -with-udev. Strangely, My problems started back 3 days ago, and what happenend 3 days ago? docker-ce has been updated on my setup. I think I caught it!!

For now, I simply killed my docker deamon

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl stop docker
The network manager is back as normal also:

The logs of journalctl are stable (almost nothing written inside for hours) and....my system is stable again since hours :) No more crashes! :D

After a little search on google, I found there is a bug between docker and udev. I'll start my containers one by one to target the problem. Final fix soon so ;)

Nice job troubleshooting and finding the source of the issue :)
When I give opinions, they are my own. Not necessarily those of any other Linux Mint developer or the Linux Mint project as a whole.

Problem solved!

When I start my docker container, because of a previous crash some gave me errors. I just stop them:

Code: Select all

dev stop backuper phpmyadmin
then removed them:

Code: Select all

dev rm backuper phpmyadmin
And start my container again. All boots perfectly, no more errors, no more network errors, no more cinnamon crash.

thanks to all!
