Missing letter 'N'

Post by Briand18 » Thu Mar 01, 2018 5:15 pm

This is possibly the silliest thing I've encountered. The letter 'n' (both case) disappears from all the system stuff eg desktop, file directory etc but is fine in applications eg Libre Office, Web browser etc. Rebooting cures it, but within a few days the problem returns. Always the letter 'n'.

Is Mint N-ist?

Even silly: We have no idea, which system you use at all.
What is your version of Mint and what is the desktop environment? If you don't know open a terminal and enter:

Code: Select all

inxi -Sz
Paste the output here.

You need to give this information for every help request in every thread.
Do not forget this in the future.

If you mark an object with the letter n inside and press F2 for renaming it, does the letter n get visible?

Actually, it's:

I have perso ally ever see this happe . n Li ux Mi t or a y other system, for that matter.

It puts a space where the n should be!

It's Mint Sarah. I thought posting this in the 'Cinnamon' thread gave a pretty good clue as to the desktop.....

Missed one after "see " but more importantly, I believe I have in fact either seen this or read about it at some point. Would need to be quite mistaken if it wasn't related to the graphics driver in use, specifically it's hardware character/cursor stuff: a software bug or spot of bad memory in an internal character table.

May have been on older, integrated Intel at the time. Not sure how helpful this is and especially as I am fully foggy on this, but you may want to for now concentrate on graphics driver and/or options it provides...

About the desktop: yes. About the Mint version: how should this happen?

Intel indeed at least. I suppose you're using the "intel" driver and not the "modesetting" one? In the former case, inxi -Gx will tell you explicitly, in the latter implicitly by not showing you any loaded driver it seems. If indeed you are using the old "intel" driver I expect a likely fix could be to use AccelMethod UXA -- but switching to "modesetting" is in fact advised for your hardware anyway so try that first: sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-intel and reboot.

[EDIT] "modesetting" is as said advised for you anyway but if this doesn't fix the issue also try switching antialiasing and/or hinting mode in Preferences -> Fonts.

Yes, I'd first try switching to the modesetting driver. Given that its a better driver for your hardware anyway no need to further debug anything if the issue doesn't show up when using it.

What's your code page set to?
I have travelled 35629424162.9 miles in my lifetime

One thing I would suggest, create a partition a ~28G partition as /. Partition the rest as /Home.
When the system fails, reinstall and use the exact same username and all your 'stuff' comes back to you.

Hi Briand18.
This is a known common issue on Cinnamon with integrated Intel Graphics.
The fix I found, I have posted here:
