[SOLVED] Is there a way to put windows in a grid?

Post by overkill22 »

I'd like to have a grid of 3x3 on my desktop, so when I resize the window (not minimize in the panel), I can tile in one of those slots. It is very similar to the function "tile", but in this case, I have a 3x3 table, I will add one window each slot and the maximize the one I need at that moment.
It should looks something like this https://imgur.com/a/T1NcX

System: Desktop: Cinnamon 3.4.6 (Gtk 3.18.9) Distro: Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya

Only a 2x2 grid is possible. What you want must be done manually
Perhaps using several workspaces is an alternative.

No, I need all on one desktop.
Is there any applet that can do that?

No, not to my knowledge. I also doubt, that an applet could do it, possibly an extension, but also there is nothing which can do this.

Greetings! Have a look @ the "x-tile" window-manager plug-in, @ https://www.giuspen.com/x-tile/ ... Though i have no need for "tiling" in my daily use, i do rely heavily on that developer's "cherrytree" note-taking app. Ime, he has an excellent track record supporting his free-ware programs. He also bundles the binaries for debian-/ubuntu-based distros. Good luck!

ps: another useful writeup re. tiling is @ https://softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/ ... vironments

No, i have not tried it because i have no use for it anymore. 2 suggestions: (a) try the grid-plugin for compiz, and try it under cinnamon, or (b) download x-tile and try it on a live-dvd/-usb stick

I used Quicktile (https://github.com/ssokolow/quicktile) and it works perfectly! It is exactly what I was looking for!
Combined with the Chrome add-on "open-as-popup" is just perfect.

Thank you all
