[Solved] Cinnamon crash at login

Post by JohnML »

What could be the cause?

Only at login Cinnamon crashes and can be restart with success!

Happens since dist-upgrade today:

Shit, can't copy update history out of update-manager. Should be possible!

Could be the same: apt- log:

You created the problem by using dist-upgrade. If you use the update manager, this will in case as here, where an update for the update manager exist, hide all the other available updates and force you to do the update for the update manager at first. In this case those packages would had been removed and the updates for those packages would no longer get offered. But with your attempt you have no control, in which order the packages get updated. So you should really change your update method and use either the update manager or the update-tool, if you really want the command line.

no, i used the update manager, but as of writing could not remember its name!

I think i remove all the virtual box modules on tuesday (Office) and see if the issue is gone.

perhaps a developer could have identify that, not me!

Aha: show-desktop@cinnamon.org is it!

Just learned: Show-Desktop-Applet has no icon and no propertys, must be broken?!!

bug-report, done!

Your version numbers in your pastebin output suggest you are not using an official repo for Cinnamon - are you on the nightly PPA per chance?

i think i don't have these nightly builds, but look at this:

https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/i ... -382314704

hope, i didn't mix in this thread Home and Office Linux Mint!!

edit:

tried to upload my cinnamon settings, but:
john1@cinna ~ $ cinnamon-settings info
Loading Info module
gvfs-open: Error:: Fehler beim Öffnen des Ortes: Der angegebene Ort wird nicht unterstützt
translate: URL is not supported?

whats going on there?

Well you've got the nightly builds PPA running and active in there... :) I thought I recognised the version numbering - I've got nightly builds active but in an Ubuntu 17.10 VM.

Anyway as advised by JosephMcc running nightly builds over Mint 18 is currently more likely than normal to break things so you probably want to remove that PPA and downgrade foreign packages via the Software Sources app. Show desktop is working fine on my main 18.3 install.

Edit to add - https://launchpad.net/~gwendal-lebihan- ... /+packages

It looks like a couple of essential components are failing to build under xenial/18.x now.

thanks for your advice!!

I disabled all PPA with "nightly"

... and i am wondering how do i get them!

Downgrade? Have to learn that first.

Debian: apt-get install package=versionnumber ?

OK, RFM as allways :-)

On the screenshot the bottom button 'Wartung' is 'Maintenance' in English. Click on that and you will find the downgrade foreign packages option. Make sure you downgrade foreign packages and not remove.

JohnML,

You'll see my post on your Github issue but for the benefit of anyone reading this here it appears the fix for the error/failure on using the Upload System Info button is to make sure that the package gist-paste is authenticated with your Github credentials so it can upload to your Github Gist.

To authenticate run gist-paste --login and follow the prompts.

Edit to add - this appears to now be necessary due to a change in Github policy on anonymous Gists - https://blog.github.com/2018-02-18-depr ... -creation/
