Right click the panel on an empty place -> trouble shooting -> reset Cinnamon to default.
Which panel should be right-clicked?
Having the same error.

Which one did you try so far, and what happened?

Hi Moem and thanks for asking.

I did three things which could have led to this: installing updates (and updating also the kernel - I think), removing some orphaned libraries, and installing another window-manager related file.
My guess is that upgrading the kernel led to this issue.

The problem is that when I boot the computer, I get the "cinnamon crashed; running in fallback mode" message, and the lower bar (Menu, shortcuts, etc) isn't there anymore.
Luckily I can still access my folders and files.

Thank you Marlar - but where should I right-click in order to make that panel appear?

You should click on an empty space at the bottom toolbar.

If you don't have that toolbar, try pressing Ctrl-Alt-Esc which should restart Cinnamon.

The panel is the bar that holds things like the menu launcher, the clock and the symbol for sound and wifi. It's similar to what is on Windows called 'the taskbar'. It's by default found at the bottom of the screen.

The image that mariar is showing doesn't depict the panel, it depicts a window.

Unfortunately that is actually my problem: that exact panel is not there anymore.
If I restart the system, I keep getting the "cinnamon crashed, you're in fallback mode" error.

Any ideas?

It depicts the popup menu you see as soon as you right-click the bottom bar.

winxpwasgreat, did you try Ctr-Alt-Esc?

It shouldn't restart the system, just Cinnamon.

Yes marlan, trying CTRL+ALT+ESC only makes the four edges of the screen blink for a millisecond, but nothing happens.

Then I would try to rename ~/.cinnamon to ~/.cinnamon.old and restart Cinnamon.

You can always rename it back again if it doesn't help.

Hmm - I don't know how to do that, nor how to do that back again if it doesn't work. Where can I find such file? Not sure how to access the file search as well.

In the other thread I have put the inxi -Fxz output: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=267497&p=1456304#p1456304

The discussion of the problem of winxpwasgreat here has a principle problem:
At first the thread (opened by another user) has been marked as solved in the meantime. This reduces the likelihood, that others look here. It also make things confusing.
At second the important information about the problem is given here in the starting post "Possible causes"). The other thread also reveals, that the problem here by the marlar and the new one are about 2 quite different systems (18.3 vs. 17.3). So it does not seem to make sense to continue here.

Cosmo. is right, and for that reason I have split this off into a separate thread.
