SOLVED -To Up-Date Kernel and Version or NOT

Post by PlutoPup »

I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.2 right now 4.4.0 - 119... I Up-Dated to 4.4.0.127 and a lot things stopped working. I removed 4.4.0 - 127 and went back to 4.4.0 -119 and everything works fine so I decided not to Up-Date the kernel anymore and just do regular updates to this kernel version. I originally started with cinnamon 18.1 Kernel 4.4.0 - 27 and Up-Dated to where I am now gradually.

Now I see there is a Cinnamon 18.3. Should I stay where I'm at or is it worth trying the Up-Grade to 18.3.?

It's hard to say but I would give 18.3 a try with a live DVD or usb stick first. It will come through with Kernel 4.10.x by default if that does not work for you, you can alway revert to 4.4 series which is an LTS kernel. But without further system info it would be hard to say if it will work on your particular hardware.
You may want to go to a terminal and issue this command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
and post the results here.
most of the time its a video driver issue that is at the bottom of kernel problems.
Good Luck what ever you choose to do.
P.S. I would not do and upgrade but back up anything important and do a fresh install if the live session works ok. Keep a copy of 18.2 around though just in case.

I tried the Live DVD of Cinnamon 18.3.... No Dice..!

I think I have up-graded as far as I can go with 18.2, 4.4.0 - 119 since my monitor is still a flat screen VGA. Running dual monitors if I update the video, only one monitor works, the one using an adapter to the video DVI Port works.

I am happy with Cinnamon 18.2 4.4.0 - 119 since everything I have works well with it.
