Starting a few weeks ago, but with no immediately known correlation/causation, I started getting VERY frequent Cinnamon crashes. It happens as often as 3 times an hour.
My system is Linux Mint 18.3, Cinnamon, 64-bit. All packages, etc. are up to date. (inxi is below)
Sometimes, it happens with an activity, such as scrolling in a web page, or as just happened, seeking in a video in media player. Other times, it doesn't seem to happen for any reason. Nothing in particular is going on.
Once Cinnamon crashes, it goes to Fallback mode, and then I tell it to restart Cinnamon. Thankfully, I'm basically in exactly the place I was moments earlier, but if I repeat the same operation that "caused" the crash (if there was one), it won't crash the second time.
Is there some place I should look for relevant logs? I'm no expert, but I checked melange, for example, and the log only goes back as far as the restart of Cinnamon.

Since I installed Mint 18.3 my only issue with crashes I isolated to my power supply and its fans and the internal chassis fans of the PC in general that were clogged with dust. Since clearing that all out a few months ago I have not had one crash.
So, before going headlong into software problems beside checking your cooling system airflow, it pays to look at the CPU and chassis fans, maybe if the computer is older the heat sink grease on its fan, and squirrely memory can cause what looks like a GUI problem. Memory issues are easily checked by lowering the number of mem boards installed. Oh, if you're an overclocker you can try throttling it back a few notches to see if that helps.
I know this all sounds (and it is, no offense meant) basic, but also check that the rear of the machine has plenty of space behind and around it to make sure it's not choking on heat that cannot be evacuated.

Thanks for all of that, but the machine is in good health. It's been cleaned sometime in the last three months (I added RAM) and has screens on the intakes. It's a mid-high range gaming rig that was probably high-range about three years ago.
Cinnamon is the only thing that crashes, so I don't think it's anything hardware related, and it started happening very distinctly a month or two ago.
The only possible thing I can think of may have to do with the video drivers I'm using-- Cinnamon might have a complaint about them.
It's very strange that Cinnamon crashes, but if I have a game running in the foreground, it doesn't interrupt it at all-- Cinnamon is just crashed in the background.
