A problem with power management

Post by Ahmed_Elsayed »

System information :

OS : Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon Beta (latest version)
Cinnamon Version : 3.8.6 (latest version)
Linux Kernel : 4.15.0-23 (latest version)
CPU : Intel I5 4200M
VGA : AMD HD 8750M

- When I use applications like : Smplayer, VLC, and Firefox, then I play any video in fullscreen mode, after 5 minutes the screen turns off, even when I play a game in fullscreen.

So I have to use Inhibit Applet to keep the screen on all the time when I play some video or play a game on my laptop.

- When I use Rythmbox, I can see in Inhibit Applet "Power management: inhibited by another program, but after 5 minutes the screen turns off like usual!

- When I play a video on youtube, the browser inhibit power manager (the only exception).

Hello Ahmed_Elsayed and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums,

Since Mint 19 is still in Beta you should report this as a bug by commenting here: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3581
Other than that, have you set the power management to never turn off monitor?

Mint 19 is no longer in beta and hasn't been for days, so that bug report would go nowhere.

Also the described behaviour isn't happening to me on Mint 19 so it's not a general problem, something is wrong on his end. I don't have a good idea what it could be though. Maybe create a new user ("Users and Groups" from the menu) and switch to it, change your power management settings to be the same as on your main user but touch nothing else and try to play a video, see if you run into the same issue. That way we'll know if it's a problem with your user settings or something else.

As far a I know - Beta remains in effect until final is announced which it has not been yet. Though I expect it at any moment. -- If you go to the Linux Mint main page the official download is still 18.3. as of 11:08 UTC June 28th. The Iso has been approved for stable release yesterday but it's not official until it's announced.

Well, the monthly news kinda announced it, although the official release announcement will be end of the week according to that. Still, with the stable version finalized and the images put up 2 days ago I don't think they'd still look at bug reports on the beta blog (but I don't know for sure). In fact, if you check the roadmap on github it seems they stopped processing bug reports from the blog over 2 weeks ago already. Probably goes with what they said on the blog today "You sent us so much feedback we had to literally stop reading just so we could focus on processing and fixing what you pointed out."

I tried VLC with videos, it inhibits power management but it doesn't with audio.

I enabled screen saver, and that helped with Smplayer to keep screen on when playing videos, but it doesn't help with playing videos with Firefox (except for youtube website only).

The most annoying thing is when I play game with Wine and forget to inhibit power management, so I have to close the game to do that.

I never had this problem when I was using KDE desktop environment.

I just don't get it how when I'm using mouse and keyboard during a game the screen turn off or the screen saver start.
