Weather App

Post by mellobob »

I have the weather app in my panel and it sort of works ... but the temperature is wrong. I think it might be 'cause whatever station Yahoo is using is wrong ... but it is the only one for my area. Other desktops, ie. Mate, use different weather apps and they report correct information.

So, can I use the mate weather app on cinnamon? How so?

Which weather app are you using?

I use this one:

Once installed, go to Menu, Preferences, Applets, click the weather app once, then click on the configure button at the bottom, and then you can click the get WOEID button in the pop-up box to go to the web page and enter your locale info to obtain a WOEID to enter in the configure dialog.

Seems to do fair picking random spots around the globe.

that weather app referred to does not work, more than it accidentally works.

I finally kicked it off my laptop, and just go to www.weather.com

that one is always there, and it correct 98% of the time, whereas the "weather app" in the repository misses the boat because it won't allow me to select my location, it picks some random spot off "somewhere"

powerwagon75 : I'm using the same app as you are. And, yes, I have the correct WOEID. I just think that whatever server this WOEID points to is getting its info wrong. No idea why. If I go to Mate, the app there has a menu which guides you though continent, country, etc. and it has the correct info.

AZgl1500 : so, it's not only me. I live in Canada and go to the national weather service and it's fine. I also have used weather underground ... and they all report similar temps ... but this app is just wrong :)

Okay, so ymmv. Just was throwing it out there as a possibility to use. I have this on 5 different systems..works on all of them. I just tried random spots around the US and Canada. They all seemed to be accurate. Are you saying they are not? I presume that when you all click on the get WOEID button, your web browser is taking you to the woeid.rosselliot.co.nz page? Just sayin', it works for me.

Hi mellobob, and everyone else interested in this,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

- My two favorite desktop weather apps have always been "my weather indicator" and "gis-weather". Recently the superb "gis-weather" has stopped working for me with any of its available weather providers, but "my weather indicator" still works great. Linux Mint 19 just came out and is based on Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic, so not sure what will work on that, check the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) too.

or to install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one: Click "Select All" above command, right click the highlighted command, select Copy (or Ctrl+Insert), click in the console terminal window, and right click paste (or Shift+Insert), repeat for each command.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/atareao

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt install my-weather-indicator
- As for system tray panel weather indicators, there are a few available for all editions of Linux Mint. Cinnamon may have more than one weather "applets" and or "desklets". Most of which are usually within a degree or two of correct. KDE has a nice weather system tray widget called "weather widget (plasmoid)".
