#robfish - thanks for the update. I've just seen that 4.0.15-29 is available. I'll try it tomorrow.

4.15.0-29 did not work for me. From all the threads about cinnamon crashing with 4.15 I think there is more than one bug. I am using 18.3 with Nvidia-340 driver. In xorg.log I got a three line message (that I lost) that the nvidia driver failed to load, see the system.log for further error messages. But I could not find further messages in system log. Have reverted back to 4.13.0-45.
I am in no rush to upgrade to LM 19 but since it comes with the 4.15.0-20 kernel I need to see it work on 18.3 before taking the plunge. Not sure if 4.13.0-45 would work with LM 19.
LM Cinnamon 19, ASUS TUF B450M, Ryzen 5 2600x, 16gb memory, Samsung SSD 970 EVO-Plus 500gb, Samsung SSD 850 Pro 256gb, dual 27" monitors, MSI GEFORCE GTX 1050ti Areo ITX. Big user of Gramps, LibreOffice, Unison.

There is a note in another thread about new ISOs using the new kernel and fixing only one or two of the known problems. The main problem fixed is the one where you have to install offline to stop automatic updates during installation. There are other problems are waiting on other fixes.

I installed 4.15.0-29 yesterday and nvidia-340 is still working.

It might be down to a subtle difference in the nvidia packages between version 340.104 in xenial (mint 18) and 340.106 in bionic (mint 19)
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

The problem is the kernel, not the nvidia-driver. The kernel dropped support, as someone told here.

Nope the problem is the driver needs updating in xenial to support the newer kernel. 340.104 in xenial's last update was Nov 17. http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs ... /changelog

340.106 in bionic has several patches applied since then - http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs ... /changelog

So it's quite possible it will work with a specific kernel in Mint 19 and not with the same kernel in Mint 18.x

That is exactly the same, what I told you. You can't blame the driver section, when the problem lies in the kernel and the kernel drops support for the driver.

No, it's not. The nvidia driver is not part of the kernel. So, as smurphos said, you need to update the driver. There is no ambiguity there.

Hmm...yeah, you are (partly) right.

Running on 4.15.0-23 with nvidia 340 - updated to 4.15.0-29. Initially got an error during the update, but it seems to have got sorted out.

Now on 4.15.0-29 with nvidia 340
