Christian - perhaps you could try going further back : 20, 15, 13 ?
Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
Unfortunately, no. None of the 4.15-kernels are working. Same build error each time.malcolm1029 wrote: ⤴Fri Jul 06, 2018 4:31 pm Christian - perhaps you could try going further back : 20, 15, 13 ?

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
Just reboot and see if it you end up in the 4.15 kernel. Those errors from ndiswrapper can't stop the kernel from being installed, I have seen those before
Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
Yes, it crashes all the time. Also on older 4.15 kernels for me.
I have now installed Ubuntu 18.04, not one I like. Hope it get fixed soon. Must have a system that works.
(Probably my old rule applies, NEVER install new version of Mint until at least a moth after release)
See that Ubuntu removed this kernel update update from LTS..
Maybee for Mint also...

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
Well, of course you end up in the correct kernel, but the nvidia-driver is not working and cinnamon is constantly crashing, like the thread creator wrote.
Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
I'm coming from Ubuntu Studio and this kernel is really wrongly compiled. No network interfaces and no KMS, so graphic accelation doesn't work. 4.15.0-23-lowlatency works just fine. You need just to select it in Grub menu. Anyways there's no fix in repos as of now.
Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
I don't think lowlatency kernels are the fix, you likely had an issue with installing linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-24 as that contains most network drivers among others. The 4.15 kernels can cause some issues in LM 18 Cinnamon but most of the 4.15 kernels are fine in LM 19 Cinnamon, some people do have slow boot times with 4.15.0-24this_paradis wrote: ⤴Sat Jul 14, 2018 11:10 am I'm coming from Ubuntu Studio and this kernel is really wrongly compiled. Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
hi jeremyb...not so much slow boots for me though i see that for some people but i was having flukey keyboard and mouse responses with the "24" kernel on 4 different computers...3 are home builds i built using 3 different asus motherboards, 1 with AMD chipset 16 gigs ram and the other 2 core i5 intels with 8 gigs ram...the 4th computer was a dell n1510 series with core i5 with 8 gigs of ram...i truly think the kernel is a problem across the board...all are now on 4.15.0-23 kernels and no problems, humming along lightening fast...DAMIEN
Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
Same happens for me, 24 only works if I keep things awake by using the mouse continuously as it boots up. Reverted back to 23 and everything works fine. Hoping 25 comes out soon and does not have the problem 24 has. I can confirm 23 works great.
Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
I have this bug but a bit different. I am on Cinnamon 18.3, using nvidia-340.104 driver with GEForce 210 Graphics card. After installing 4.15.0-24 cinnamon crashes on boot and goes to fallback mode. Some investigation I found LM 19 comes with 4.15.0-20, so I tried it. Same problem. Never tried 4.15.0-23. The nouveau driver works. I ended up using kernel 4.13.0-45 with success.
My question is will this be fixed?
bug 1737750 seems to describe the problem as drivers 304 and 340 were left out of the 4.15 series kernels. I think it indicates the problem is being worked on.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1737750
The Nvidia web site says: The 340.xx legacy Unified Memory kernel module is incompatible with recent Linux kernels, and the GPU hardware generations that the 340.xx legacy driver series is intended to support do not support Unified Memory.
http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe ... 5161/en-us
So I am not sure if the resolution will be to fix the kernel or I will need to get a new graphics card that may also be obsolete in a year or two. I have a pretty decent computer I built in 2014 that still works great for my purpose, hope it is not going obsolete.

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
It's not unusual that newer kernels leave old hardware behind. Although in this case it's a problem with the proprietary driver, not the kernel. A driver that nvidia may not patch because I don't think they're all that interested in it anymore. The bug report you linked had a link to a third party patch to the driver though.benchrest wrote: ⤴Sun Jul 15, 2018 2:03 pm So I am not sure if the resolution will be to fix the kernel or I will need to get a new graphics card that may also be obsolete in a year or two. Thanks for the hint. I'll try the patch.gm10 wrote: ⤴Sun Jul 15, 2018 2:09 pmIt's not unusual that newer kernels leave old hardware behind. I downloaded the patched installer from this this site and just installed the driver.
I can upgrade to Mint 19 now.

Glad I could help. You did all the work finding the bug report, all I did was actually read it for you, haha.bl0ckz wrote: ⤴Sun Jul 15, 2018 3:41 pm It's working like a charm!
I downloaded the https://nvidia.if-not-true-then-false.c ... tched.run from this https://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/ ... a-guide/4/ and just installed the driver.
I can upgrade to Mint 19 now.
Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
This is the second time in roughly a year that the nvidia driver did not work after a kernel upgrade.
I changed to the X.org Nouveau driver this time and it seems to be fine.

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
Just updated to 4.15.0-29 kernel this morning then reinstalled the nVidia-340 driver and all seems well again (for me anyway)
