Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
My LM Cinnamon 18.3 PC was working well until today when Update Manager offered Kernel 4.15.0.24, and I accepted!
Prior to that the kernel was 4.13.0-45-generic x86_64 (64 bit), and Cinnamon version is 3.6.7.
Now after every start, this error window appears:
"Cinnamon just crashed. You are currently running in Fallback mode. Do you want to restart Cinnamon? Yes/No"
Choosing 'Yes' results in an error message repeat.
Reverting to Kernel 4.13.0-45 restores normal operation, but I'm concerned that any upgrade to LM 19 is now in jeapordy as I believe it also uses Kernel 4.15.0... ??
I'd appreciate any thoughts and advice on how to approach/solve this issue. Thanks.

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4 15.0-24
You're going to have to stick with 4.13.0-45 for a while.
ndiswrapper wouldn't compile with 4.15.0.24 and I'm assuming that the nvidia driver had the same experience.
And if Mint 19 ships with 4.15 then you should wait until the developers get this straightened out

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4 15.0-24
It does, but since Mint 19 was built around the 4.15 kernel and comes with newer versions of Cinnamon, X, drivers and potentially a different desktop manager (lightdm), the conclusion that it will cause problems as well really cannot be drawn.
Besides, Mint 19 ships with 4.15.0-20, you don't need to upgrade to -24 should it cause problems.

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4 15.0-24
Just fyi, I installed 4.15.0.24 a few minutes ago and the nvidia driver (384.130) didn't miss a heartbeat. Unfortunately I can't find any bug reports that might explain the several issues that have already popped up in the forum around this kernel.

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4 15.0-24
Linux Mint 19 should be fine as all the packages support the 4.15 kernels, not all packages support 4.15 in Linux Mint 18/Ubuntu 16.04 repositories yet, possibly August or later

Same - no problems for me with this kernel on Integrated Intel graphics on Cinnamon 19 and on a Cinnamon 18.3 VB install. It's got an extensive change-log though.
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

Urgh! I don't fancy wading through it

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4 15.0-24
Thanks everyone for responding with helpful thoughts/suggestions. Looks like my elderly nvidia GeForce 7600GS video card and legacy 304.135 driver are the limiting factors.
As recommended I'll stick with kernel 4.13.0-45 for the moment and trust that when I do eventually upgrade to LM 19 all will be sorted. Probably not rush though and definitely run Timeshift first

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4 15.0-24
Same crash with Cinnamon 18.3, GeForce GTX 570 and 304.135 legacy driver after accepting the kernel update.
Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4 15.0-24
Me too - I use the Geforce GT220 GPU.
I found that by going from the recommended driver nvidia340 to the xserver-xorg-video-nouveaux, Cinnamon works again.
I will try the nvidia driver again on v.19

I was hit by the same update and had to revert to 4.13.0-45. The graphics are plain Intel. Nothing else. The update also killed wireless access.
Lucky I had Windows handy to browse the Web.

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
Clem's reference to a related bug report indicates that there is a patch for the 304 driver, but unfortunately, no one has been assigned to fix the 340 driver.
Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
malcolm, try an older 4.15 kernel and see if the same happens. I think a Cinnamon memory leak in LM 18 is more severe using 4.15 kernels. I don't really have any way to prove this but my issue was that sometimes after suspend my programs that were open no longer were...google chrome and thunderbird. It did work fine with 4.4 kernels and now that laptop is using LM 19 with 4.15 without issues.
The reason I ask about a kernel older than 4.15.0-24 is because it has a bug in it that could be an influence on results

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
#JeremyB - I installed 4.15.0-23, booted from it and re-set the driver to nvidia340 - all is fine!
$ uname -r
4.15.0-23-generic
So the problem came after v. 23 ?

Re: Cinnamon constantly crashes after update to kernel 4.15.0-24
I can also confirm, everything is peachy when running mint 19 cinnamon, on 4.15.0-23 kernel. Chaos reigns down on my system once upgrading to the -24.
