Cinnamon crashed problem again (SOLVED)

Post by Prsman »

Hi everyone. I just installed a new SSD in my computer and I installed Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64bit. The installation kernel was 4.10.0-38 and this got updated to
4.15.0-30. I then used Driver Manager to install the nvidia driver I need for my card. Its the 340 driver and it worked fine on the old harddrive installation of Mint.
I get the cinnamon has crashed now in fallback mode error message. I read on here that kernel 4.15.0-30 has problems with certain nvidia drivers.
I plan to reboot onto the 4.10 kernel and use driver manager to install the nvidia driver. I changed the boot menu from quiet splash to nomodeset, made no difference. My question is: Can I use the 4.10 kernel if it works or do I have to go to 4.15? Would an earlier version of 4.15 be ok? Thanks

(EDIT) Well it didnt work. Booted onto kernel 4.10 and used driver manager to install the 340 driver. Rebooted onto kernel 4.10 and driver manager says I am on 340 but inxi says nouveau. What to do?

Its best to work with the kernel which doesnt give any problems. Whether any kernel will work or not is a case of trying it out. Its difficult to predict

I always had issues with Cinnamon crashes and bugs, so I gave up and switched to Mate. Mate has never crashed once for me with nvidia drivers installed. Mate is very similar to Cinnamon.

Just to update. This morning Driver Manager offered the latest Nvidia drive for my card. So I installed and rebooted. Cinnamon did not crash but I am still on nouveau driver. I am running kernel 4.15.0-30. I am going to try kernel 4.4.0-131. My hardware is old. BTW, driver manager shows I am on the nvidia driver.

I changed kernels and installed the nvidia driver. I am still running on nouveau, but cinnamon is not crashing. Will mark this as closed. Now I just have to find out why I cant install the the nvidia driver. Thanks for stopping by.
