Window decorations changed after removing OpenOffice

Post by triode » Wed Aug 22, 2018 6:31 am

In a fit of need, I upgraded open office on my linux mint 18 with cinnamon to OO6.1. I did this by performing the following actions:

I removed these packages that were with OO5:

libreoffice-avmedia-backend-gstreamer/xenial-updates
libreoffice-base/xenial-updates
libreoffice-base-core/xenial-updates
libreoffice-base-drivers/xenial-updates
libreoffice-calc/xenial-updates
libreoffice-common/xenial-updates
libreoffice-core/xenial-updates
libreoffice-draw/xenial-updates
libreoffice-gnome/xenial-updates
libreoffice-gtk/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-de/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-en-gb/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-en-us/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-es/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-fr/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-it/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-pt/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-pt-br/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-ru/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-zh-cn/xenial-updates
libreoffice-help-zh-tw/xenial-updates
libreoffice-impress/xenial-updates
libreoffice-java-common/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-de/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-en-gb/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-en-za/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-es/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-fr/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-it/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-pt/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-pt-br/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-ru/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-zh-cn/xenial-updates
libreoffice-l10n-zh-tw/xenial-updates
libreoffice-math/xenial-updates
libreoffice-ogltrans/xenial-updates
libreoffice-pdfimport/xenial-updates
libreoffice-sdbc-firebird/xenial-updates
libreoffice-sdbc-hsqldb/xenial-updates
libreoffice-style-mint/sylvia
libreoffice-writer/xenial-updates

Then,
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libreoffice

And it works fine, but now the menus and window decorations (and all buttons, etc in window menus) are "strange". For example, this is the minimize/maximize buttons:
Screenshot from 2018-08-22 05-25-44.png
Screenshot from 2018-08-22 05-25-44.png (450 Bytes) Viewed 348 times
And when you hover over them they just turn into black blocks. In trying to figure out what package I removed that might fix it, I reinstalled
libreoffice-gnome
but that had no effect.

Any input would be appreciated.

Tip for the future: don't remove your old LibreOffice (not OpenOffice), but simply add the LO PPA. Then refresh Update Manager and install the updates. Painless, clean, no side effects.

Arg, I keep mis-speaking... I mean LibreOffice. I never installed OpenOffice.

So, is it possible to install the old LibreOffice and get the theme/icons/whatever that is back?

Thanks.

I'm afraid it might be not that easily reversible. You've done some collateral damage by removing the old LO first... Nevertheless, it's worth a try.

I suppose I could uninstall the ppa version, then reinstall LO standard version from the built in repos, then reinstall
LO from the ppa...

It does change it, but alas, the original icons are no longer in the list. I settled on one for now.

When my computer is doing less critical things I will remove and reinstall LO.

Removing that package is this issue - despite the name it is not a libreoffice component - it's actually part of the mint-themes packages. You'll find if you look around that you are missing a some backgrounds, various stock themes etc. You would have seen a warning on removal that other packages would be removed as-well. Not a good idea to disregard those warnings.

I was missing mint-artwork-gnome mint-themes... after I installed that I could switch the theme back to mint-x, which is what I wanted.

Thanks for all of the help.
