Cinnamon crashes and has to restart

Post by happnatious1 » Wed Aug 22, 2018 9:22 am

Cinnamon crashes pretty often for me and I'm not really sure how to go about trouble shooting. It crashes, runs in fall back mode and then prompts me to restart. For instance it crashed this morning right around 9am. here are the logs around that time.

So I bought a new monitor. 34 inch curved and I love it. It's been a long time since cinnamon crashed, but it just did. But this time I didn't loose my desktop background and the ability to drag by desktop icons around. Progress!

Code: Select all

System: Host: bill Kernel: 4.15.0-32-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.7 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3)

That's pretty much the same as my system on an old Dell Vostro 1720 laptop, which also has an NVIDEA card. After a recent update, Cinnamon constantly crashes on startup, will not restart without crashing but runs ok(ish) in fallback mode.

I solved my problem by selecting the "18.3 Generic with advanced options" menu entry from the boot menu (Hold shift on startup if you don't get a menu), then selecting and booting into the 4.13.0-45 kernel from the next menu. That worked perfectly. I think, but I obvioulsy don't know, that there's a problem in the 4.15 kernel.

I removed the 4.15.0-45 kernel using Update Manager -> View -> Linux Kernels -> 4.15 then double click the installed/running version and then remove. A quick reboot and I'm back with the main option on the boot menu giving me the 4.13.0-45 kernel and Cinnamon no longer crashes.

HTH

Cheers,
Norm.
