Multiple Issues with Cinnamon (Sorry for undescriptive Title)

In addition, I have a laptop GTX 1050ti, since I know that Graphics Cards are especially finicky in Linux, if it matters.

:D

So, onto the actual issues.

1. Settings not actually changing anything

So, my power settings in the cinnamon menu don't appear to actually have any effects. When I go to Settings > Power Management > Lid Closed > Off, nothing changes. It still locks me out when I close the lid and I need to re-enter my password. Besides a minor inconvenience, this leads into my second (and much more dangerous) issue.

2. Lag when Idle

So, I am not on my PC 24/7, but I also do not like to have it turned off, since I have Linux Mint installed on /dev/sdb, which is a HDD, leading to slow boot times. The issue is, if the PC is idle for a significant amount of time, then Cinnamon appears to lag for a minute or two, apps lag behind, they open slower, the desktop is slow as molasses in general. Unlike normal, when everything is fast and responsive. This, coupled with the lock screen issue, is deadly, since when the lid is closed for a long time... it completely freezes, forcing me to open a tty and reboot. Is there a fix to either, but ideally both of these issues?

Thank you for reading, and if I need to provide any more info, I would be happy to.

try using the Mate Desktop:
- from Package Manager AKA synaptic:
search for Mint-Meta-Mate &install that - - it should also pull in some extra packages, as well.
- - the whole package should be less than ~100Mb in size.

then log-out & select the Mate DE from the icon that is on the Top RHS of the log-in screen,
& then type your password & log-in as normal.
:)
then see if there is any differences with those issues that your are experiencing.

But will that cause issues? I heard that installing multiple Window Managers can cause problems...

And also, will it uninstall cleanly?

Or just run:

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i '/IgnoreLid=/{s/false/true/}' /etc/UPower/UPower.conf;sudo sed -i '/HandleLidSwitch/{s/#//;s/suspend/ignore/}' /etc/systemd/logind.conf
and reboot.
