[Solved] How to search in file content?

Post by Pierre Thibault » Sat Sep 15, 2018 9:57 am

In Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon using Nemo for search does not search in file content. Is it possible to make it search in file content too?

It is possible to make it search in file content too but that will take some programming at your end (to implement it :)). Assuming you didn't mean that, you'll have to use a different search tool for deep searches.

On the command line you have a plethora of options. Obviously grep but that is rather slow and limited. Try ripgrep as that is about 20 times faster than grep and has features to make searching easier.

For GUI deep search try Recoll or Catfish. Both available through Software Manager and will let you do deep search (search content of files). Heavier and slower than ripgrep but probably the way to go if you want a GUI.
