each workspace a different background

Post by 52ROSt »

LM 19.0 Cinnamon

In the KDE desktop environment I really liked to have different backgrounds for each activity because it was so easy to see in which activity I am.

In Cinnamon I could create several workspaces. For each workspace I want to have a different background and cannot figure out how to do it.

Question: How can I set up a different background for each workspace?

Thanks in advance for your helpful hints!

I too asked this question some months back and was told that it could not be done.

Take care.

Might be worth a request at the appropriate place. Xfce has this and they only update every several years (last was Feb 2015.)

Thanks for your feedback.

This is a heavy drawback on my move from KDE to Cinnamon.

Such a feature should be standard whenever the workspace etc can be created.

I don't want to go the kubuntu but there it is all standard as it was in LM KDE. LM 17.3 KDE worked excellent for me.

It can be done with a background bash script in Cinnamon - although the background change did slow down the change workspace animation on my system. Not sure I kept the script I wrote. I'll have a look and try and dig it out.

Couldn't find it so I wrote another one....I've obviously learnt something in the interim this one doesn't impact the workspace change animation.

Updated Instructions - This script is now hosted on Github at - https://github.com/smurphos/nemo_action ... on_scripts

Install instructions

Clone the repo

Code: Select all

git clone https://github.com/smurphos/nemo_actions_and_cinnamon_script
Make ~/.local/bin directory

Code: Select all

mkdir ~/.local/bin
Copy the script to ~/.local/bin

Code: Select all

cp -r ./nemo_actions_and_cinnamon_scripts/.local/bin/workspace_background_switcher.sh ~/.local/bin
Copy the autostart entry to ~/.config/autostart

Code: Select all

cp -r ./nemo_actions_and_cinnamon_scripts/.config/autostart/workspace_background_switcher.desktop ~/.config/autostart
Optionally review the script to amend end user editable variables to suit your preferences.

Code: Select all

xdg-open ~/.local/bin/workspace_background_switcher.sh
Log off and log back in.

You were probably thinking of this one, at least you mentioned the workspace transition there: viewtopic.php?p=1515261#p1515261
Was about switching themes, not backgrounds though. And I had that in my bookmarks for reference, I didn't go search for it, no worries. ;)

Well remembered gm10 - indeed it was and it was setting a per workspace GTK theme not the background that caused lag.

I note from your exampIe I can simplify the extraction of the workspace number - done

@smurphos

Thanks for your help. I will dig into this later and get back to you.
A slow down in the transition between workspaces will not be that important.

Is there a chance that a different background for each workspace will become available at 19.1. or 19.2 or is it very much up in the air and might take a few years?

You are likely too late for 19.1 - Cinnamon 4.0 is already in the wild for Arch and Fedora based distros so will effectively be at feature freeze now. And whether the devs are interested in adding it as a core feature of Cinnamon or not would be debatable - you'd need to raise is as a suggestion.

Nothing stopping someone coding it as an extension though.

This was (obviously, dare I say, it's such a core feature) already raised as a suggestion many many years ago: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/1774

So unless you create a pull request for this yourself, or - as you said - create it as an extension, it's unlikely to happen on its own.

I asked this same question a few months back, so just to be sure (and) cut through some of the ambiguity in subsequent posts; your little script will allow different backgrounds for different desktops? It looks like it would, but since I can NOT write code I just wanted to check.

If the answer is yes, I can't wait to take it out for a spin.

Thanks.

The answer is yes - it works just fine for Cinnamon.

All I can say is cool! It will find itself ensconced in the new "19" install I'm working on.

Thanks.

If you were using Acitivities in KDE it's more than just backgrounds, no other DE has anything with the power of Activities (or KDE in general).
