How do I make a shortcut to a folder on an external HD?

I tried using ln -s /media/ashle/Elements/!1Art/Commissions /home/ashle/Desktop but it failed and told me the destination was not correct, then offered to move it to trash

You are going to need to escape that !; see HISTORY EXPANSION in man bash. Works otherwise...
