No icon, in custom category in desktop menu

Post by antrrax »

I add a new category to the Cinnamon desktop menu. I set a custom icon (I tried several png image size 22x22; 24x24; 32x32; 256x256px), at that time in the menu editor, the icon is normally displayed. But when I go in the menu the icon is not displayed.
How to solve this?
what size and what image format should I choose?

What version of Mint / Cinnamon are you using? You don't think you can use random downloaded loaded icons but you can use icons referenced in your current icon theme. The new icon picker GUI in Mint 19.1 makes it easy to find those.

Mint: 19.1
Cinnamon: 4.0.9
Kernel: 4.15.0-43-generic

In the new menu item I used the same image of the icon pack: "Windows-10", in my user folder ".icons"
/home/"MY_USER"/.icons/Windows-10/256x256/apps/libreoffice-main.png
In the menu editor the icon appears normally.
But when I look at the desktop menu, the selected image does not appear.

my icons: Windows-10-master.zip

my theme: Mint-Y-Yltra-Light

Don't pick the icon by path, use the search by name function. I think it's a limitation of the menu or the spec that categories icons just don't work if referenced by a full path, but they do if referenced by just the name of an icon in the current icon-theme path. Added bonus is that the correct sized icon is always used (the theme includes several copies at different sizes)

I thought I could put an external image.
But from what I understand I can only use native images of the icon theme.

thanks

You should be able to use a custom icon. I do it all the time in my menus, but it's more complicated.

Never seen that post robim. Nice selection of tips/hacks :D

Interestingly during beta for 19.1 the new icon picker GUI was patched to not show icons placed in the root of the icon directory as they were failing to display in other contexts when referenced by name only e.g. as a custom panel icon for the menu.
