Seemed relatively likely given that linked-to bug-report but I wouldn't know then what is complaining: insert generally applicable rant about a program not actually saying what is being chatty. I'll have to leave it up to you to investigate further.

I upgraded to Kernel: 4.15.0-46-generic and Cinnamon crashed. I timeshifted back to Kernel: 4.15.0-20-generic and it is working again. I am using LM19.1 loaded with nomodeset

I did the same and it still crashed and since I can't work with a non-working computer I had to do it the painful way - Reinstall from scratch.
This time with LM19.1 Tessa.
I formatted / but kept /home which I have on separate partitions still crashed Cinnamon so there is something stored there causing the crash.
This explains why the rollback with Timeshift didn't helped me.
Backed up the entire /home partition to an external drive and reinstalled once more, this time all partitions where formatted and now it works without any crash.
Then I restored my documents, VirtualBox machines etc from the backup drive.

Restoring by doing the rsync twice with -av was a very good way. ( good parameters to test the syntax in a dry-run is '-avn')

!! One important thing I haven't seen when using Timeshift is that you must remember the users passwords at the time for the backup if it has been changed.

Now I'm trying to get the computer back in working order by reinstalling the applications I had before this issue with my fingers crossed that I don't run into the same problem again. NVIDIA drivers won't be installed at all.
