So far, so good, but I really have no idea what interval it'll be before any return.
You mean until the icon bug returns, if it does? I cannot say, I'm not even using Cinnamon, so you'll know better than I. All I know is that in a live environment of the 19.2 .iso it happens instantly with the official version - across several restarts of mintupdate it either showed no icon at all or just the quarter of it, but never the whole thing until I went into panel edit mode or whatever the workaround mentioned above was.

But should it ever return even with my version there's even something else you can try, in Preferences check "Use AppIndicator for tray icon", that'll make it use a different way of displaying the icon.

Well, I will admit seeing the word "unstable" a number of times during the install dialog kinda caught my attention :o
Heh, the packages with the "unstable" versions are actually all identical to the 19.2 release versions, but I cannot just rename them. Take it as a reminder that it's a PPA I guess. My typical release cycle is weekly, not 6-monthly, which may or may not impact stability (you be the judge).

In this case I'm not quite sure whether the bug is ultimately with Cinnamon (it does not happen on any other desktop environment):
https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/issues
or Update Manager (my version does not appear to exhibit the issue - pending your confirmation):
https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate/issues
I don't think it's Update Manager as I've had the same experience with the Messengerfordesktop app when it changes the icon when a message is received. Also in this screenshot you can see the notification for a calendar event is affected.

It doesn't start happening upon boot in my experience...it starts happening later in the session. Like, for example, it literally was visible right before I posted the earlier message saying it was still going on.

That said, your version is still quarter-bug free.

Would you believe that this is the first PPA I've ever installed? (Remember, I'm still somewhat a newbie!)

Fascinating. For me, it's always Update Manager.

That would make sense as it's usually the leftmost icon that seems to be affected.

Maybe it's because my eyes are blurry due to lack of sleep, but I can't find this...

Yes, it certainly has the "feel" of a general panel bug.

Oh, sorry. Either right click the icon > Preferences, or from the main window > Edit menu > Preferences.

ETA: Oh, I was looking at every Preferences setting screen except the one that actually matters! (Update Manager) Geez, I need to wake up.

To wrap this up, it was an official bug that was squashed by the Linux Mint team:

https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3802
Before we get started with the news, I’d also like to thank the people who helped us troubleshoot the Update Manager tray icon bug last month. It was an important bug, which we couldn’t easily reproduce, and thanks to you we were finally able to fix it.

Did or didn't install ppa:gm10/linuxmint-tools ?

I did install gm10's PPA.

I'm just noting that this was officially noted as a now-fixed bug.

Ok, just to clarify because now it sounds really confusing:
  • The Update Manager from official Mint had a bug with the tray icon that was fixed.
  • The Update Manager from my PPA never had this bug.

Thanks for making this clear to those reading.

Yes, I installed the PPA, Yes, it fixed the bug. Yes, the Update Manager update in the official repository fixed it as well. I was just pointing out that the bug no longer exists no matter where you get your Update Manager :D
