hide title bar

Post by shmu » Sun Sep 01, 2019 3:18 am

Is there any working tweak, or hack, or applet or something, to hide the title bar of maximized application windows, for Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon?

I don't want to autohide the panel. I want the panel to show, but I want to hide the top bar (title bar) of maximized applications. This used to be possible through the Maximus applet https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/e ... ns/view/29
But it doesn't work with recent versions of Cinnamon.

That depends on applications developers i.e. Chrome and Firefox can be configured that way and that works irrespective of the DE in use, but many other can't. If you're asking because you have a wide screen then auto-hiding panel is a good remark as it definitely saves some space.

If this is about a specific extension it seems like you should submit a report on github so it can get fixed.

1 Hiding the panel is probably a great idea in many cases but it doesn't work so well in my specific case, because it makes the open windows change size when I show the panel again.

2 This is not about a specific applet, I just mentioned Maximus to make the idea clearer. On the Maximus github page, the issues have already been reported, although it seems that some users have had success with it. And there is a "fix" mentioned over there by @hard13 that I don't quite understand.

There is another applet, hide-title-bar https://github.com/AleFelix/cinnamon-ap ... -title-bar that does work as advertised, and it is in fact quite true to its word, because it also occasionally crashes Cinnamon, just as mentioned on the github page. It is described by the author as "experimental".

Unfortunately I cannot help you with Cinnamon-specific questions for lack of experience with that desktop but for a generic way to remove an X-window titlebar that should work on any DE run this in a terminal and then click on the window:

Code: Select all

xprop -f _MOTIF_WM_HINTS 32c -set _MOTIF_WM_HINTS "0x2, 0x0, 0x2, 0x0, 0x0"
This can be scripted, check the xprop manual to see how to specify specific windows:

Code: Select all

man xprop

That script is magic!

I tried it a few times, and sometimes it crashes cinnamon, although it is a no-brainer to just restart cinnamon from the prompt that automatically pops up on the screen.
So I am guessing that hide-title-bar runs this script.

I wouldn't know. If it crashes that would be a bug with Cinnamon (or rather Muffin).
