You are running Cinnamon using the MATE desktop? Those messages are about activating org.mate.panel.applets. I run the Cinnamon desktop and I have no mention of MATE applets in my syslogs.

Can you please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Enclose the results between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Do you know what app that might have been? That might be what is causing the issue.

What were some of the changes you made to your system before this error occurred?

You don't have an Nvidia card, so Nvidia is not the source of the problem.

I went back through the list you had in the first post. There are a number of deprecation warnings, so I'm thinking that some of the apps you are using are not in sync with the current specs Cinnamon is using.

Take notice of what you are running when this error comes up the next time. Or at least take notice of what time it is and then check the /var/log/syslog file at that time stamp to see what is happening. I don't have any ideas right now of what specifically might be causing this, so logs will probably be the best way to narrow down the possibilities unless someone else has ideas.

I believe what's happening here is that Cinnamon is crashing, so it's falling back to the MATE components that are installed for this purpose.

This is beyond my ability to help troubleshoot, but should help in clearing up some of the confusion.

But I wouldn't think MATE wouldn't be using deprecated components, would it?

I really don't know how that all works. But it all becomes moot when the Cinnamon crashing part gets fixed. And none of this is anything I have any experience in whatsoever. :(

Sometimes, the failure occurred when entering the desktop, after entering the password, it seems that, when finishing the desktop display, something causes the error. Other times, while using the system, with the porgrmas I use, the error occurs even without having opened anything at that time.

I have made another clean installation in a second PC. After installation, I runned "dpkg" to list with "grep -i MATE", has listed tha same modules that I hava in my principals PC. Than, install all updates, drivers, google chrome, Brave Browser, TTF MS Core Fonts, so, list of MATE itens still the same.
I think that it's necessary packages for "cinnamon" D.E..

I do not have this applet installed so I did a search. While results come up in the search engine, I can not see the source because the site is migrating. However, what did come up on the search results is:
- - - - - -
Applets : QRedshift : Cinnamon Spices
[Search domain cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/313] https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/313
Hi, really a fan fan of this applet, it truly is one of the most useful ones. But when I install this on Linux Mint 20, Cinnamon version 4.6.6, the Applet dialog box displays a message "This applet contains function calls that could potentially cause Cinnamon to crash or freeze".
- - - - - -
I am not familiar with the Cinnamon Spices and with the website down my ability to familiarize myself with them is limited, but it is possible that a spice is causing problems, especially if one has "function calls that could potentially cause Cinnamon to crash or freeze". Other spices might have that caution as well.

Cinnamon was updated to version 4.6.7 about a month ago. I do not know how often the Cinnamon Spices are updated.

I found a screenshot in English to better express this situation, at the link below:

This problem eventually occurs in any of the four pieces of equipment that I use. One PC and three notebooks.
So, I click Yes and the system restore all windows, menus, etc. For me it is not a big problem, but for my wife, who has no technical knowledge, it causes discomfort during her professional activities.

I suspect there is something in common which is installed on all those computers which is causing this to happen.

Are all of them still running LM20?

LM20.1 has a newer version of Cinnamon and muffin than what is in LM20, but I do not know if that would help since we do not know what applet/extension/file might be causing the issue.

The next time it happens, check the ~/.xsession-errors file. That is a hidden file in your home directory and is where Cinnamon messages and errors are written.
