[SOLVED]Linuxmint is stuttering on the ryzen r5 3550h, especially when dragging the window

Post by omonk »

I am currently using Linuxmint 20.When I use the cinnamon desktop, there is a short pause when I drag a window, especially when I make the window top-suck or maximize. At first I thought it was a problem with the cinnamon desktop, so I installed the KDE plasma desktop environment, but the problem persists, and I get stuttering when I drag the window.Still not giving up, I tried kubuntu and the stuttering persisted when I dragged the window.I have used manjaro-kde before and have not had this problem.I wonder if this is a problem with ubuntu (since Linuxmint is based on ubuntu) or the Linux kernel (manjaro's Linux kernel version is 5.6+, linuxmint's kernel is 5.4)?

Welcome to the forum, omonk.

KDE Plasma is not a supported desktop for Linux Mint, so that is not a solution to any Mint issue. ;)

Can you please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Enclose the results between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware. It's possible this could be video driver related, but there are also other things which might be producing what you are seeing.

I'm a sis. :) And I have more knowledge about Nvidia than AMD, but maybe I can provide a little help.

If I understood the information in this thread AMD Boot Issues [Solved] correctly, the newer kernels have newer mesa versions which may be why the newer kernel seemed to work better for you. (The newer kernels may also have newer AMD drivers.)

The Mesa framework (in blue below) is part of graphics rendering (in orange). However, it may also be possible to get that updated Mesa by using drivers from AMD or from upgrading to a newer kernel in Mint. That thread was a good learning session for me as it gets into how to tell which AMD drivers and Mesa versions you have and how to tell what is available from AMD (you have to read until the end of the thread to get to that info).

Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Picasso vendor: Lenovo driver: amdgpu v: kernel bus ID: 03:00.0
chip ID: 1002:15d8
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.8 driver: amdgpu,ati
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 2560x1600~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: AMD RAVEN (DRM 3.35.0 5.4.0-26-generic LLVM 9.0.1)
v: 4.6 Mesa 20.0.4 direct render: Yes

There are others on the forum with much more AMD experience than I have so that is about all I can offer at this point.

I also wanted to point out your computer seems to be missing an audio driver (red). If you are noticing any issues, you might want to search the forum on that and/or create a thread in that section of the forum.

Audio:
Device-1: AMD Raven/Raven2/Fenghuang HDMI/DP Audio vendor: Lenovo
driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus ID: 03:00.1 chip ID: 1002:15de

FireFlight is a redundant SoC feature in that Lenovo laptop. It's actually meant for a custom Gaming PC and Console made by a Chinese Company but of course it is in all R5 3550h because they didn't want to run a separate die fabrication just for one Company.

Mesa is responsible for 3d acceleration. To a certain extent desktops do use 3d to render effects, but in a very limited way. Upgrading mesa, may or may not resolve the issue.

The easiest way to upgrad mesa is by adding the kisak mesa PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~kisak/+archive/ubuntu/kisak-mesa

Be careful when trying to remove this PPA.

The kernel is repsonsible for most of the display rendering. Picasso is not that new, so kernel 5.4 should be sufficient. Nevertheless you can manually upgrade to kernel 5.7 or 5.8 by downloading the mainline ubuntu kernels. This is an "at your own risk" exercise obviously.

Note that by October, the 5.8 kernel should show up in the update manager since that's the Groovy deafult kernel.

If you enable the reliable Canonical Kernel Team PPA, you can already have the 5.8.0-19 right now:
