This is the part of the log where it appears an hourly job finished (it is not Timeshift because Timeshift runs on the hour) and then the system was shut down. The job finished at 12:17:02 and then at 12:19:25 the system was shut down. Two seconds later the logout sound was played.

How long did this freeze last before you powered down the computer? On other logs, I've seen lines which indicate the power button was pressed which started the process of shutting down, but I do not see that here. So I am either not understanding what is happening or I am not asking for the correct information.

And you did that and then shut down? If so, the last thing which appears to be running was some type of report that runs once/hour at at 17 minutes after the hour. It appears it runs in the background, but I do not know what it is.

That means I did not look at the correct part of the log. At approximately what time did the freeze happen? I will check the log again tomorrow as I will be off to bed soon.

I am guessing it may be a program you installed? The command that runs is cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly so maybe there is a file in the /etc/cron.hourly directory that will give you an idea of what is running.

If it was Vivaldi creating the report, there may be a setting in it to stop the report from happening. I do not know enough about Vivaldi to know, but removing it definitely would stop the report.

Ctl-Alt-Backspace restarts X Server. That type of even is not normally recorded in journalctl, so I do not when that happened in the log.

I am not able to determine from this log what may have happened. If the freeze was related to a particular app, it would not necessarily show in this log.

Since you have removed Vivaldi, we can see if maybe that might have been causing the freezes.

I just saw someone else post about freezes and mentioned see this command as the last thing running before the freeze.

While I had checked my directory before posting, I did not think at that time to show hidden files or to check my own syslog. I did that this morning and found I also have that line in my log (but do not experience freezes) and there is a file in that directory which indicated it was a placeholder for dpkg. I think this process that runs at 17 minutes past the hour may just be part of the code for Update Manager.

My question now is:

Is mlocate the problem, or is the chron system the problem, and will the devs learn about this from this thread?

Can search work without mlocate? Is mlocate default with the OS package?

This is a user forum where users help other users. The Devs are not involved in this thread. If you find what you believe is a bug, it needs to be reported on GitHub. The Devs see bug reports.

I am not having freeze issues on my laptop, so I do not know what may be different about your setup that removing mlocate might help your situation.
