want to see ip address in status bar.

Hi there
I use the splendid protonvpn and would like to see the public ip address I am presenting. In the past ( ubuntu 18) I would use indicator-ip but that's not supported any more. So How can I get the ip address showing please? I have linux mint 20.1 fully updated and upgraded. It's a vanilla install.

Sorry I SHOULD have mentioned that the indicator-ip script put the public IP in the status bar onscreen at all times next to the connection icon. My bad so the protonvpn IP feature isn't the same. Also protonvpn has a kill switch function which could be used but not reall the same

What's the problem with indicator-ip - is it just missing a number of python2 libraries (LM20 has stopped support for python2)? That can usually be fixed.

It's no longer maintained AND when I tried to install it it;s not in the repository. This is a great shame as I found it REALLY useful.

Just had a look, ip-indicator is available as an applet to download, downloaded it and activated, it does show a warning against it but does appear to run. I have my flag appearing in the panel (in the UK) and when I hover on it, it does show my external IP address.

Running LM20.1 cinnamon.

WOW I didn't think to look for an applet!!! outstanding. Thanks for helping a dullard out

I tend to install everything from the cli, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. I HOPE that I can just turn it on rather than the hover function as it's REALLY useful when I am connected to the vpn to remind me what's going on. Thanks again, when I am back at my daily driver I'll look into this.
just noticed you are in Wiltshire. I used to holiday in Witham hole priory. My cousin rehabbed the oid priory in the 70's. A WONDERFUL part of the world. Thanks again.

just tried out your solution. Worked like a champ but I get a little flag NOT the number which is more useful. Thanks again.

Yep, we lived in Frome and worked on the priory which was a ruin. They put a LOT of hard work into it and made it a real place to behold. I used to enjoy messing around in the stream picking up old stuff from the bed. I was too young to drink but the pub was OUTSTANDING.
