High CPU load while Video watching

Post by RandoRandy »

Hey,
since today my laptop sits at 70% all core load while watching videos or in zoom conference calls. Something between 20% and 50% comes from the cinnamon task. Any help is appreciated!
I have a Lenovo Flex 5 14 amd with a Ryzen 5 4700u.

Welcome to the forum. Your computer is quite beefy and is a little faster than mine.
I am on LM19.3 Cinnamon.
Please run System Monitor, run a video, and take a screen shot of System Monitor (Alt - Prnt Scrn).
I had a live stream going and then started another YT video at the same time and mine looks like this:

Here you go. The little dip at the end are the few seconds between stopping the video, switching to System Monitor and taking the screenshot.

Well I'll be. That is unexpected. If it is not causing any trouble I would tend to ignore it, but watch it closely. I also wonder if the edge kernel is available to you. I don't know hardly anything about it, but you can give it a try if it is in Update Manager - View - Linux Kernels. Even the 5.8 kernel is not listed on my LM 19.3.

So, could it be some update screwing up? I don't remember exactly when it happend, but here is my update history from around the time, either on the 11th or the 12th it must have happend, do you have any idea wich one it could have been?

And just now, my Cinnamon was cruising at a toasty 40-45% with the screenshot tool open, so it must be some sort of a graphics related issue?

I don't know...

Thanks for your time and help anyways!

I don't have a clue. I have never had to do this, but I keep recommending it for others.
Timeshift back. Add updates slowly over time with other snapshots taken until it breaks again.
Back up one snapshot and tell us which one broke it.

Well...
I'm quite new to Linux and I installed Linux for uni related stuff and I haven't gotten around the whole snapshot and backup stuff, so the best I can do, is to manually install the older versions of the packages... Or I wait for the next update, that fixes it, right now I'm quite stressed with uni, so probably the latter...

But thanks for the help anyways and I'll report back here, when I get it fixed somehow.

If you have the disk space Timeshift can save you many man-weeks worth of work in just a couple of minutes. I haven't reverted back to a snapshot in probably more than 2 months now, but it sure is handy to have when needed.
