Cinnamon keeps crashing and going to fallback mode.[Solved]

Post by Kev1105 »

I applied the recent updates and this started happening yesterday.
Is there any known causes or fixes on the way?

Updates come through at different times for different mirrors and not everyone updates when the updates first become available. That means we have no idea what you updated. We do not even know what version of Mint you are using.

I suggest you open Update Manager and select View>History of Updates to give us and idea of what you updated.

Also give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

It appears the bulk of the updates were the oibaf-ppa. That ppa has been known to cause issues in the past.

Do you have a Timeshift snapshot of when the system was running well? I would suggest reverting to it and disabling the auto updates of the ppa to see if that helps.

I had the same issue when upgrading the Mesa packages from the "oibaf" PPA. Luckily for me I had the previous versions of the drivers from before the update and went back to those. I've just received another update that I'm ignoring for the time being as I have now accidentally deleted the last known good packages :(

My current installed versions of the oibaf that doesn't cause Cinnamon to crash...

mesa - 21.1~git2104130600.f9b527~oibaf~f
libdrm - 2.4.105+git2104141700.67a64b~oibaf~f
llvm-toolchain-12 - 1:12.0.0-1~oibaf~f

I'll report back once I've secured these packages again and then tested the latest updates from the "oibaf" PPA.

Okay I've just upgraded to the latest versions of mesa (21.2~git2106020600.148723~oibaf~f), libdrm (2.4.106+git2106020500.4e1788~oibaf~f) and llvm-toolchains (1:12.0.0-3~oibaf~f) and everything is okay.

By the way, in my case and not necessarily validating anything, in did the updates starting with llvm-toolchains followed by libdrm and finally mesa with a reboot in between each as I suspected that the cinnamon crashing issue was because of a change/regression in the mesa packages.

Best of luck 👍

I haven't received any updates for the OIBAF ppa lately
However applying the rest of the updates and a few reboots and the problem has not reoccurred.
If it happens again I'll remove the ppa
Thanks for the assistance
