After 20.2 upgrade, Mint will not sleep/suspend

Post by TActually »

Hey there Mint fam!
So I am a noob and fully accept all hazing that will probably come my way.
So I searched google/qwant/youtube and couldn't find anyone else reporting this issue.
I also searched in several places on this forum and couldn't find anyone with the same problem.

After upgrading (inside of Mint) to Uma 20.2, my system will not sleep
When I manually click "suspend" it locks the screen, but will not actually sleep/change power states.

I've reviewed my system.log after an attempt and I'm unable to see anything pointing to the cause.
I've double checked the power management settings and it's currently set to suspend after 30 minutes.
I've waited for over an hour for my computer to sleep, on it's own, and nothing happens.

I've attached the results of an inxi command and I've attached my system log.
Any help?
inxi-output.txt

I'm trying to attach my system log but even after i trim it down, it says the file is too large.
I think.... I THINK... this is where the problem is.

Welcome to the forum, TActually.

I recommend you upgrade your kernel. The 5.8 kernel has fixes for 3rd gen Ryzens that are not in the 5.4 kernel. You can upgrade to 5.8 or 5.11 as both options are available in Upgrade Manager. (The 5.8 kernel reaches end of life next month.)

To upgrade the kernel, open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Select 5.8 or 5.11 on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Here is the inxi so others do not have to download it.

If the kernel change does not help, the next time it does not sleep, run dmesg -T | tail -n 200 in a terminal to see if the sleep command was given, but something prevented it from happening. The last number can be adjusted to give more or less information.

Also, check to make sure you are running the latest BIOS/UEFI as that can affect power states such as sleep.

As an FYI, your windscribe is listed as the LM19 repo and not the LM20 repo.

Thanks SMG.
Also for posting my inxi...
I will figure out how to post it like that in future post (no don't tell me, I really should figure it out for myself).
will update after updating the kernel

So, updated to Kernel 5.11, rebooted.
My system still won't suspend/sleep.

Thanks for the other command, I did notice a ACPI failure that I am also unable to find any Mint specific references.
I did find a few references to the failure with Fedorda, but even still no one figured out what the issue was.
I'm going to try updating my bios next and I'll drop another 200 lines log after.

Re: After 20.2 upgrade, Mint will not sleep/suspend

Post by SMG »

I do not see any indication a suspend request was sent. I also do not have any ideas why LM20.2 would be different from LM20.1 unless you maybe also updated your Nvidia driver when you made the change? Some people have been running into odd issues with sleep which are related to the Nvidia driver.

Is the output you are posting from dmesg or syslog?

What happens if you run pm-suspend in a terminal? Does it suspend?

Hi SMG,
The snippets were both from dmesg.
I did, to your point, revert from nVidia 465 driver to 460 just before performing the upgrade to Uma.
Also , running the manual suspend in the terminal yielded the same exact result as clicking suspend.

In the end, I used timeshift to revert back to 20.1 and now my computer sleeps like it should.
Coicidentally, I had some issues with the graphics driver loading and with audio on 20.2.

Maybe it was just a bad upgrade?
But in either case, I am 100% functional back on 20.1
I wouldn't call this SOLVED,but maybe Mitigated? is there a choice for that?

Since you know you have a Timeshift snapshot which works, if you want to test the theory the Nvidia driver might be a factor, you could upgrade while leaving the Nvidia driver the same and see if the system will suspend.

It seems a lot of people are now seeing a difference in the timing of Nvidia driver loading which can mean nouveau sneaks in and loads. In that situation, often restarting X Server with Ctl-Alt-Backspace fixes the issue and a more permanent solution is in this post this thread [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration"). The inxi output you posted looks like nvidia loaded properly.

If you want to stop the investigation at this point, you can just edit the title of the first post and add [CLOSED].

Thanks SMG!
For now, I am good, but I don't want to close the investigation. If I have some free time, later on, I'll experiment more.
I know that a friend of mine who also updated to 20.2 from 20.1, had some of the same issues that I did.
I have a feeling that others will start to experience this issue soon.

Hi, I'm having the same issue, with old hardware 2013. I did not upgrade, but completely reinstalled from 19.3 to 20.2, I also had Nvidia 460 before. I did uninstalled all nvida 470 drivers, went to noveau, and back to 460. Unfortunately I forgot to test while I had only Noveau.
I found in the logs that after attempting suspension, I get the following:
systemd-logind
User of sesion c3 not known.
