Can not see devices and USB flash in Nemo

Post by Chirill369 »

Hello, I am running Cinnamon(4.4.8) Mint 19.3. I can not see devices (and NTFS partitions) and USB flash in Nemo(4.4.3).
The dialogue of plugged USB flash is not showing any more, as it was earlier.
The fact is that devices and partitions are visible in Disks utility and in Dolphin, and can be mounted from there.
Also, I can see devices/partitions in Nemo in case it is running as root.
So, I suspect the problem is ownership related somehow. But I do not know what exactly is wrong.

This command does not return anything

Code: Select all

find $HOME ! -user $USER -type f
Can anybody help me, please?

Welcome to the forum, Chirill369.

Did this just start happening or has it been happening for a while?

Do you have any Timeshift snapshots of when your system was working properly?

Thanks for your reply.
This just start happening. Unfortunately, I did not notice after what changes it happened.
Currently, I do not have snapshots. But I have the same system running on my laptop, which was migrated with Mint Backup tool. since then, the systems, became a bit different.
So, I doubt, whether it is possible to apply a backup from another machine (with similar system), or not. Or just a piece of backup (which piece)

We would have to know more details about both system to know if something like that might be possible.

If you have a separate home partition on the computer having issues, it would be possible to reinstall system files. However, if the problem is somewhere in the configuration directories (which are under /home) that would not help.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

By you can see these things when using Nemo as root, you mean you've been opening graphical apps with the sudo command ? You're not supposed to do that, although if someone uses the correct switches shouldn't cause issues. Read and/or google up on sudo.

Anyway chown all the files in your users home directory back to being owned by your user. Am just assuming you're onto something in thinking it's a permissions problem. Open terminal ...

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /home/$USER
See if that fixes this.

Hmm, okay. :P

Would next try tracking down and making a backup of any config files related to nemo that are in your users home directory, just add a .bak extension to the things and leave them where you find them and then reinstalling the thing. eg:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install --reinstall nemo
Have you been (did you) monkey around with a bunch of it's settings/preferences-etc ? Anyway if that doesn't fix ya up, good luck. :)

The command doesn't return anything for me, either. Yet I can see my drives just fine in Nemo, so I doubt that means much.

You say that the partitions are visible and can be mounted in Dolphin. When you mount them, does it ask for your password? And once it's mounted, does it become visible in Nemo or still no luck?

If you open the Gnome Disk Utility, click on the little cog icon after selecting a partition, and select "Edit Mount Options". Can you see any differences there between partitions that are visible/accessible and those that aren't? If so, can you edit it accordingly and see if anything changes?

It appears when you mount the device, the device then does show up in Nemo, but it appears it is locked? The video on my screen was not clear enough to tell what the symbol to the right of the name is, but it sort of looks like a lock symbol to me.

And then when you clicked on the device name in Nemo the device disappeared from Nemo?

Then you opened Dolphin and when you clicked on the Device name, it then showed up in Nemo as locked? (same icon as prior device)

Am I understanding the video correctly?

Are the devices you are attaching also encrypted? (I did not notice the system asking for a password for them.)

No, the device can be mounted correctly form Dolphin, or Disks utility, and after that it showed up in Nemo, and can be accessed via Nemo as well. The icon near the device name is "unmount" button, it is ok. I clicket Unmount, and it disappeared.

I use tree view in Nemo and the unmount icon does not show when using tree view. I forgot about that when I was viewing the video.

This was not the impression I received from your earlier posts. Perhaps this is a terminology issue.

You titled this topic "Can not see devices and USB flash in Nemo" and said you could only see things in Nemo when running as root. That does not appear to be the case. It appears you can not see unmounted drives in Nemo. Once you go into Disks or Dolphin and mount the drive then it does show up in Nemo. You are not running as root when you see those drives in Nemo; you are still running as the same admin user.

The change which seems to have happened is those drives are no longer automatically mounting when you attach them. Are these drives you normally have attached to your computer, or are they ones which are sometimes attached and sometimes not attached?

I had an issue in the past (and I think it happened when running LM19.3) with one particular removeable drive that did not automatically mount. I had to go into Disks to mount it so it could be seen in Nemo. I do not recall if the issue cleared in an update or it cleared when I moved to LM20.

The problem is definitely not in automatic mount functionality.
If I run Nemo that way (as root):

Code: Select all

chirill@chirillpc:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for chirill:
root@chirillpc:/home/chirill# nemo
Nemo shows the devices, and I can mount and unmount them.

You have to manually mount the drive for it to show in Nemo because it is not automatically mounting. It is not as if there is a permission issue which is preventing you from seeing the drives at all in Nemo, because you can see them after they are mounted. That's why I think this may be related to auto-mounting. I could be wrong.

Are the drives in question connected all the time? If not, that would help you with regards to what timestamps to check in logs. I suspect there would be messages in /var/log/syslog that might give clues as to what is happening.

I just tested this by opening syslog (it is a text file), scrolling to the bottom, and then plugging in an external drive. I then saw the message I should reload syslog because there was new information. There were a number of kernel messages about the drive and its attachment and whether it was write-protected, etc. Then at the end were these three lines:

Code: Select all

Sep 28 13:03:45 SMG-HP-6360t kernel: [21054.990958] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk
Sep 28 13:03:46 SMG-HP-6360t systemd[1]: Finished Clean the /media/SMG/New Volume mount point.
Sep 28 13:03:46 SMG-HP-6360t udisksd[543]: Mounted /dev/sdb1 at /media/SMG/New Volume on behalf of uid 1000
Notice the last line says it is mounted on behalf of uid 1000 (my non-root user). My Mint install only has the one admin user.

Since your drives are not auto-mounting, you made need to manually mount them in Disks and then check syslog again to get clues as to what might be happening.

Have you checked your settings in nemo's preferences:
