Desktop slows down when playing videos in browser

Post by jc1 »

The desktop slows down significantly regardless of which browser I use (Firefox/Chrome) and an external monitor.

Your system is quite full. A number of people have found when they cleaned their system so it was not so full that it become more responsive. If possible, I recommend getting under 75% and the lower the better. Here are some tips How to Clean Linux Mint Safely.

@SMG, I did clean it up and now it's better, but still a bit sluggish. Any other suggestions?

What is the current percentage?

Have you checked to see if there are any BIOS/UEFI updates available for your computer? Sometimes they include performance improvements.

Videos are intensive both with CPU and GPU usage. You could see if turning off hardware acceleration setting in the browser helps.

There have been memory management improvements in Cinnamon 5.x which came out with LM20.2. When your system gets bogged down a bit, you may want to see how much memory Cinnamon is using. It's possible you may see an improvement if you move to the newer version. (Just something to consider.)

I just did a check on the GPU in your computer. NVIDIA GeForce 940MX which indicates "This device has no display connectivity, as it is not designed to have monitors connected to it. Rather it is intended for use in laptop/notebooks and will use the output of the host mobile device." so you may just be pushing into the limits of your hardware.

The external monitor is what I would consider large.

Code: Select all

resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz, 3840x2160~60Hz

@SMG, I got it down to about 80% disk space usage. I looked for BIOS updates with the Samsung tool, but there were no updates available.

Cinnamon Memory usage:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
4342 jc 20 0 3293468 218492 91064 S 6.6 1.3 9:49.20 cinnamon

Sure, I'll try updating Cinnamon.

Thanks so much for checking into the GPU. I suspected that this TV is just too big to get great performance with computer. Your suggested cleanup did help though.

Do you think it's a good idea to overclock the GPU? The page you linked says, "The GPU is operating at a frequency of 1004 MHz, which can be boosted up to 1242 MHz, memory is running at 1001 MHz."

One last question, but does it matter if I use the USB-C or HDMI port? I'm currently using USB-C.

I have only limited feedback on overclocking, but what I have received indicates people have run into issues when overclocking. That feedback may related to how much it was overclocked and the hardware, but overclocking is not normally something we recommend with respect to monitor performance.

I do not know which GPU (Intel or Nvidia) is attached to which ports on your laptop, so I do not know if it might make a difference or not. If you have the cables to try the change, you can see if it makes a difference.

I would go thru your /home folder and move any seldom-used files to external storage to free more room on your nvme drive.
