Looking for a special characters applet

Post by jero »

Hello.

I'm looking for a Cinnamon special characters applet, like this:

I wonder if this exists?
I managed to find a few leads about this, but these are very old:

This would make it a lot easier to insert special characters like 'é' on a Qwerty keyboard.

Thanks.

A temporary workaround could be the use of the on-screen keyboard "Onboard".
It is already installed in Mint Cinnamon.
Like the MATE character applet, Onboard's launcher can be placed in the panel.

Linux Mint does have a "Character Map" similar to windows, where you can view the unicode characters for each font installed on the system.
It doesn't give ALT codes but Unicodes

é is Unicode U+0117
You can also copy it clipboard so you can then paste it where you want.

This program can be found under Accessories
PC: Intel i5 6600K @4.5Ghz, 1TB NVMe SSD, 32GiB 3000Mhz DDR4, GTX1080 running Mint 21.3
Laptop: Asus UM425UAZ running LMDE 6

Not an applet but Kcharselect is in the software manager. It is a KDE utility for finding special characters.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions.

In the end I solved this problem by changing my keyboard layout to English (intl, with AltGr dead keys).

This solved my problem for 99%, now I can type a lot of foreign (mainly French) characters by pushing AltGr or Shift + AltGr.
