system settings not opening 20.2 [Solved]

Post by beachgardener »

Hello,
The issue is that on a new install of 20.2 Cinnamon the system settings does not open, putting that in terminal says no pil, but looking in synaptic python3-pil is there, I did try python-pil but made no difference.
I see some others are having the same issue. Are there any answers to this? Thank you.

I've not encountered this on any of my deployments, but I've also noticed others are having similar issues after upgrading to Cinnamon 5.0.6. Example ...

viewtopic.php?f=47&t=359659

It appears rolling back to a previous Timeshift instance resolves it, but I don't know if that means staying at 5.0.5 for now, or that a "try again" of 5.0.6 works thereafter.

I would suggest researching the other threads for options to consider. That's my only advice for now, as I can't replicate the behavior to investigate further. :?

Edit: I stumbled across this which appears to have a viable solution ...

As this is a new install there are no Timeshift's available prior to install date which had all updates applied.
In the morning I will try what is in another thread to reinstall pil.
viewtopic.php?f=208&t=359711&p=2084946#p2084946
Otherwise I will try another clean install.
Thank you.

Same link :)

And a big thank you to steph68 for this information.
Re-install pil did the trick.

Code: Select all

apt install --reinstall 'python3-pil' 'python-pil'
