Screen doesn't turn off / power management options don't work / Screensaver doesn't activate

Hello forum,
I'm new to linux love it so far hope perhaps you could help with the following:

Issues:
1. screens won't turn off after idle (applied setting in power management.
They appear to flicker for a second when idle time arrives, then turn back on again.

2. Screen saver doesn't work + lock screen doesn't activate.

3. Screen seems to 'flash' a solid color for a second every few minutes before returning to normal (not sure if it's related but still quite annoying)

I have tried:
Enabling / Disabling screen saver - Screens still won't turn off even with screen saver disabled.

Additional question:
Is there a way to manually turn the screens off and set lockscreen (since it doesn't work automatically)

Alright, created a new user and tested both new and old user.

This time lock screen seems to work (for both new and old user).
So that's one problem solved.

However the turn off screen part doesn't work - same thing for both users:
The screen flickers for a moment going to stand by mode then a second later wakes up again (both screens).
It would seem something keeps waking the screens up.

If I understand right, this is #1 from your starting post, right?

And yes did a fresh installation, problem started since day 1

As it is obviously not an acceptable way, to replace your system with LM 20.3 - and this can give new problems also - try this: Download and boot 20.3 Cinnamon (not the edge edition). I don't know, if the screensaver works in the live system, most likely not. So you need to activate the screen saver in the live system and watch, what happens here.

Yep, the kernel gives the problem. Note, that this is not always the case. I use the same kernel version and I have no problems.

Be patient and wait. The next version will surely come and hopefully it solves the problem.

It was not a good test because the 5.4 kernel in LM20.3 does not have the graphics drivers for your GPU. All you did by running that live session was confirm software rendering mode works. You do not want to run in software rendering mode.

One can not even properly test using the LM20.3 Edge ISO because that ISO does not have the firmware needed for an RX 6700 XT. (See the notes for an RX 6700XT in Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues (including external monitors not working).)

So the results of that test have no real meaning as far as troubleshooting this issue.

Standby with a monitor is usually related to DPMS which is a setting in the monitor which interacts with the graphics driver. I will re-read your topic later and see if I get any ideas for testing the problem.

There are DPMS settings in monitors and there are also graphics driver settings for each type of port on your GPU. (I mention that because, if there are differences you are noticing between your two monitors, the fact they are different connections might be a factor.)

The power management setting from the operating system does not always have the ability to override what the GPU and monitors are doing.

Let's check the X Server log to see what information the graphics driver may be picking up from your monitors. Please use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:

I am aware of there being a 5.17-oem kernel available for use with LM21 so, if it appears this might be a graphics driver issue, perhaps a newer kernel will help.

There are also some settings with xset which sometimes work to turn off a stubborn monitor.

It's my understanding if you tried adding the drivers from the AMD website then these repos get added. AMD is really wanting people to switch to using drivers from the kernel and not separate installs from their website.

Looks like magic. You are painting the desktop with your mouse. I think, many years ago, I used to watch a children's show that did that. I have no guesses at this time what might be causing it.

Am I correct to presume all the hardware was working properly in Windows before you made the switch to Linux Mint? I did find this 6700XT detection won't let primary monitor turn off, but that was on a Windows install.

This link is not for your specific monitors, but it explains the states of Power management of the display. The graphics driver is picking up your monitors are set to "Off" which means "Never attempts to turn the display off."

I'm not sure why that is happening.

If you want to try the newer kernel (which would give you newer graphics drivers), you can install the latest 5.17-oem kernel with

and then reboot.

However, I would suggest removing those AMD repos first. I don't think those drivers are being used, but drivers from the website do not work with OEM kernels.

That might be the case yes, I did try installing from AMDs website to see if it might solve the problem.
I removed both AMD repos now.

Yes you are correct within windows there was no issues with screen standby mode

I am aware of settings for this as "enabled" or "disabled", but I thought making sure it was enabled would let the DPMS do its thing with regards to the four settings (normal, stand-by, suspend, off). This setting is an interaction between the GPU/driver and the monitor.

I feel like I'm missing something easy, but I will have to think some more and get back to you because I do not have any other ideas right now other than checking to see if resetting the monitor(s) does anything.

Someone posted what they indicate is a similar issue on this forum, but they have Intel graphics so it is a different graphics driver. This type of issue is usually related to the graphics driver.
