Laptop turns back on whenever the display sleeps, sometimes exposing contents under the lockscreen

Post by NuclearManx »

Hi there,

I have recently got a new monitor (Dell AW3423DW), and it works like a dream on my main PC with Linux Mint. The monitor is the only display device that my PC has.

However, my laptop is a different story. I have the screensaver to start after 1 minute (locking the screen) and power management to turn the display off after 5 minutes. This worked OK on my old monitor via HDMI, but not the new Dell. What happens is that when this kicks in and the display turns off, after about 20 seconds or so it turns back on! And after another 5 minutes the cycle continues.

On top of this, there is a flaw whereby the contents of my actual screen is shown (e.g., my emails if I left that open) because the lock screen seems to bug and only take up the top left of the monitor, exposing the contents of the laptop monitor and most if the main monitor.

As a temporary measure, I have turned off auto input switch and eco mode on the monitor and that has resolved the issue. However, I would really like to be able to fix the issue from the OS side. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

I am using 64-bit Linux Mint,
Cinnamon,
No output errors, just the above described behaviour.

Welcome to the forum, NuclearManx.

I have moved your topic from Hardware Support to Desktop: Cinnamon because what you have described sounds like issues which have already been raised in that forum.

Your description sounds like this issue Lock screen security issue (imo)5 which is a known bug.

Were you using the same operating system version with the old monitor (where this worked) as compared to the new monitor (where it does not work)? Or were you using an LM20 version when using the old monitor?

According to Dell Latitude 9420 System BIOS, version 1.15.0 has a fix related to external monitors, "- Fixed the issue where the external monitor does not work when the system resumes from shutdown or hibernate mode."
Machine:
Type: Laptop System: Dell product: Latitude 9420 v: N/A
serial: <superuser required> Chassis: type: 10 serial: <superuser required>
Mobo: Dell model: 08XKF8 v: A01 serial: <superuser required> UEFI: Dell
v: 1.14.0 date: 08/08/2022

Maybe the updated BIOS/UEFI will help with the issue with the new monitor.

There are also two OEM kernels available, 5.17-oem and 6.0-oem, we could try if the BIOS update does not help.

Thank you for your reply!

I was using the same OS with the old monitor where this worked. This is a fairly new laptop so it has only ever had LM21 installed.

Thanks for pointing out that BIOS update. I have just updated that but unfortunately that does not seem to have resolved the problem.

What do the OEM kernels do? And how would you recommend I go about trying them?

So both cases were using this newer laptop. Originally you had the older monitor, but now you have a newer monitor.

Many newer monitors have "energy-saving" features which can sometimes cause differences in how they react when compared to older monitors.

OEM Kernels have a slightly difference design, but they are still maintained my Canonical. Right now, they are the only newer-than-5.15 kernels options available within the Linux Mint ecosystem.

The OEM kernels are available in Synaptic Package Manager, but you can also install them from the command line. It is possible the newer kernels will have updated graphics drivers for your computer so they may impact this situation.

You can install the latest 5.17-oem kernel with sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04 and reboot.

You can install the latest 6.0-oem kernel with sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04b and reboot.

If neither work, you can remove them using Update Manager as long as you are not booted into the kernel you are removing. Linux Mint automatically boots into the highest number installed kernel.

If these do not work, we may have to use xrandr commands to turn off the monitor. Some others have had to do that although there is not yet a common theme among those who seem to run into this type of issue.

Thanks for the suggestions and information.

The laptop today seems to be sleeping the screen correctly with no further action taken. I am not sure why. Hopefully this solution lasts long-term, but if not I will try the kernels!
