[SOLVED] Lock screen after upgrade...

Post by invex »

LM21C
4k monitor, 150% scaling
Upgraded from 20.3.
After the upgrade, the lock screen is unusable.
The computer becomes unstable, a partial desktop is shown, and the only way to exit is to power off.
Any suggestion?

I am not aware of the computer becoming "unstable", but the lock screen showing a partial desktop is a known bug. Please see this topic Lock screen security issue (imo)5.

Describe what you mean about the system being unstable and provide system information.

Open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy, and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Thank you for your help.
Instead of 'unstable' I should've used 'unusable'.
Unusable because I can't get out of it.
I captured one picture, but the screen constantly changes.

Try turning the monitor off and then back on. You only have one screen as compared to the person in this comment, but maybe that will work so you are not hard powering-down the computer.

You are running jammy, but it seems you still focal (LM20) repos.

Have you checked with a live session of Linux Mint 21 to see if the behaviour is exactly the same? You would want to rule out the upgrade being part of the issue.

Thank you again for the tips.

Turning the monitor off/on didn't help.
Live USB - it only blanked the screen for about six seconds. The same thing in guest account that I tried too.

However, I found the culprit.
Fractional scaling. After all, it says 'experimental' in the settings :)

The strange thing is that in 20.3 fractional scaling worked flawlessly.

The windows manager was completely rebased in LM21 to be closer to the Mutter defaults.

Interestingly, fractional scaling is on by default in LM21. It is not on by default in LM20.3.
